Have you ever reached into your bag only to hear the sickening clink of your phone screen scraping against your keys? It is a heart-stopping sound that every gadget owner dreads.

We carry our expensive devices everywhere we go. Yet, finding a protective sleeve that fits your specific phone or tablet perfectly can feel like searching for a needle in a haystack. Most store-bought plastic cases are bulky, uninspired, and surprisingly expensive.

That is exactly why I love making my own protective sleeves. Crochet offers the perfect cushioned barrier against scratches, bumps, and minor drops while letting you show off your personal style.

Today, I am sharing a wonderfully simple pattern that you can adapt for any phone, e-reader, or tablet in your household. We will be using a clever variation of the single crochet stitch that creates a dense, textured fabric resembling tiny stars.

For this project, I chose Sable Sugar 'n Cream cotton yarn. It is sturdy, offers incredible stitch definition, and holds up beautifully to daily wear and tear.

Materials You'll Need

• Yarn: Sable Sugar 'n Cream (100% cotton, worsted weight, size 4) in two contrasting colors.
• Hook: Size H (5.0 mm) crochet hook.
• Notions: One 3/4-inch metal button, a stitch marker, and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends.
• Yardage: Approximately 110 yards (one ball of Sable Sugar 'n Cream) is enough to make a mini tablet case. Phone cases will require significantly less.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Creating the Foundation Ring

To begin, leave a long tail of your main color yarn for sewing the bottom later. Chain an even number of stitches that wraps comfortably around the width of your device. Add 3 to 4 extra chains to this count so your device can slide in and out easily.

Carefully join with a slip stitch to the first chain to form a ring, making sure not to twist your chain.

Step 2: Working the Base Round

Chain 1 (this does not count as a stitch). Work 1 single crochet in the next chain and in each chain around. Your final single crochet should be worked into the same chain as your starting chain 1. Do not turn your work and do not join with a slip stitch.

Place a stitch marker in the very first single crochet of the next round. You will move this marker up at the start of every round to keep track of your spiral.

Step 3: Establishing the Textured Pattern

Now, begin the main stitch pattern: *work 2 single crochets in the next stitch, skip the next stitch. Repeat from * all the way around.

Keep repeating this round in a continuous spiral. Continue until your work reaches half the height of your device (for a tablet) or slightly more than half the height (for a phone).

Once you reach this height, skip the next stitch, slip stitch into the following stitch, and fasten off your main color.

Step 4: Seaming the Bottom

Before moving on to the stripes, turn your cozy inside out. Use the long starting tail and a tapestry needle to whip stitch the bottom edge firmly shut. Turn the cozy right side out again.

Step 5: Adding the Contrast Stripes

To keep your color changes looking neat and seamless, never crochet over the yarn tails of your previous color. Instead, weave them in later to avoid bulky spots. Always join your new color a few stitch pairs away from where you fastened off.

Using your contrasting color, join with a single crochet in the space between any two single crochet pairs. Work 1 single crochet in that same space. Skip the next stitch. *Work 2 single crochets in the next space, skip the next stitch. Repeat from * around. Skip the last stitch, slip stitch to the first single crochet, and fasten off.

Repeat this stripe process using your main color and contrasting color once or twice, depending on how many stripes you want to add. Weave in all loose ends now.

Step 6: Finishing the Body

Once your stripes are complete, join your main color in the same manner as the stripes. Work one round of the pattern, but do not slip stitch at the end. Instead, work 2 single crochets directly into the first stitch of the round. Skip the next stitch, place your marker, and continue working in a spiral: *2 single crochets in the next stitch, skip the next stitch. Repeat from * around, moving your marker up each round.

When your cozy is 1/2 inch shorter than your device, skip the next stitch and work 1 single crochet in every stitch around. Repeat this simple single crochet round one more time. Slip stitch to the first stitch and fasten off.

Step 7: Crafting the Button Tab

Choose the appropriate tab size for your device:

For a Phone Case: Chain 16. Work 1 single crochet in the second chain from your hook and in each chain across until 1 chain remains. Work (1 single crochet, chain 3, 1 single crochet) in that last chain. Rotate your work to crochet into the unused loops of your starting chain, working 1 single crochet in each loop across. Fasten off, leaving a long tail.

For a Tablet Case: Chain 18. Work 1 half double crochet in the third chain from your hook and in each chain across until 1 chain remains. Work (1 half double crochet, chain 3, 1 half double crochet) in that last chain. Rotate your work to crochet into the unused loops of your starting chain, working 1 half double crochet in each loop across. Fasten off, leaving a long tail.

Step 8: Assembly and Button Attachment

Sew the flat end of your button tab to the inside back center of your cozy. Weave in any remaining yarn tails. Slide your device inside, fold the tab over the front to find the perfect placement, and sew your 3/4-inch button onto the front of the cozy to align with the tab's buttonhole.

Common Troubleshooting & Fixes

• Problem: The cozy is too tight and my phone won't slide in.
  Fix: Your starting chain might have been too snug. Unravel and restart, ensuring you add those 3 to 4 extra chains to your width measurement.
• Problem: The bottom seam looks bulky or uneven.
  Fix: Make sure you turn the cozy inside out before whip stitching, and avoid pulling your sewing stitches too tight.
• Problem: The color changes look messy or have gaps.
  Fix: Ensure you are joining your new yarn in the gap between the single crochet pairs, rather than directly into the stitches.
• Problem: The button tab is too short to reach the button.
  Fix: Simply add 2 to 4 extra chains to your starting tab chain to make it longer.
