Abbreviations & Stitch Instructions

Step-by-Step Instructions

The Foundation and First Section

Row 1: Chain 14. Work 1 esc in the 3rd chain from your hook. Work 1 esc in each chain across. Turn. (12 esc)

Row 2: Chain 1 (this does not count as a stitch here or throughout). Work 1 esc in the very first stitch, then work 1 esc in each of the next 11 stitches. Turn. (12 esc)

Repeat Row 2 until your piece measures 8 1/2 inches for the Preteen/Small size, or 9 inches for the Medium/Large size.

Creating the First Split Strip

Row 1 of Strip: Chain 1. Work 1 esc in the first stitch, and 1 esc in each of the next 5 stitches. Turn. Leave the remaining stitches unworked for now. (6 esc)

Repeat this row until this individual strip measures exactly 3 inches. Fasten off.

Creating the Second Split Strip

Attach your yarn with a slip stitch in the first unworked stitch at the base of your first strip.

Row 1 of Second Strip: Chain 1. Work 1 esc in the same stitch as the join, then work 1 esc in each of the next 5 stitches. Turn. (6 esc)

Repeat this row until this second strip also measures 3 inches. Do not fasten off.

Crossing and Rejoining the Strips

Take the top strip and cross it over the bottom strip to form an "X" shape.

Note: If your working yarn is positioned in the middle after crossing, fasten off and reattach it at the outer edge of the strip. If it is already at the outer edge, continue working with it.

Finishing the Length and Seaming

Repeat the 12-esc row until the entire headband measures 20 inches for the smaller size, or 21 inches for the larger size.

Do not fasten off your yarn.

Bring the starting edge up to meet your last row. Slip stitch the two ends together to form a seamless loop. Fasten off and weave in all loose ends.

Adding the Textured Border

To give the twist a clean, finished look, we will add a reverse single crochet border.

Gently lift the twist section. Join your yarn with a slip stitch at the base of the first strip.

Work a round of reverse single crochet along the edge until you reach the top end of the strip, then fasten off.

Flip the headband over. Lift the twist again, join your yarn at the base of the second strip, and work reverse single crochet along this edge to the top. Fasten off and weave in your ends.
