Keep your feet incredibly warm and cozy with these plush, thick crochet slipper boots featuring a stylish faux-fur trim and wooden button details.

Free Crochet Boots, Arctic Boots for Women

There is nothing quite like sliding your cold toes into a cloud of pure, squishy warmth on a freezing winter morning.

I know that feeling all too well.

For years, I struggled to find slipper patterns that actually stayed snug around my ankles without slipping down or letting in drafts. Most of them ended up feeling more like loose socks than actual boots, which left my feet cold and my inner perfectionist frustrated.

That is why I set out to design a pair of boots with real structure, using thick blanket yarn and a clever wrap-around throat design.

This pattern builds on my popular 1.5 Hour Slipper, but with a major upgrade. I designed separate left and right boots to ensure a perfect, anatomical fit that hugs your feet beautifully.

You are going to love making these.

Why You'll Love This Pattern

  • Unmatched Comfort: The super bulky chenille yarn creates a thick, cushioned sole that feels like walking on clouds.
  • Tailored Fit: With distinct instructions for the left and right feet, these boots won't twist or slip off as you walk.
  • Stunning Details: The luxurious faux-fur cuff and rustic wooden buttons give them a high-end, boutique look.

Materials You'll Need

  • Yarn: Super Bulky Chenille Yarn (Size 6), such as Bernat Blanket or Bernat Baby Blanket (approx. 200 yards). Small amounts of Red Heart Hygge Fur (for the trim) and Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton (or any DK/thin worsted cotton yarn for the button loops).
  • Hook: N/P (10mm) for the main boot, K (6.5mm) for the fur trim, and F (3.75mm) for the button loops.
  • Notions: Big-eye tapestry needle, locking stitch marker or safety pin, and four 1-1/4 inch wooden buttons.
  • Yardage: Approximately 200 yards of super bulky yarn, plus scraps of fur and cotton yarn.

Gauge & Sizing

  • Gauge: 7 single crochet (sc) stitches and 7 rows = 4 inches using the 10mm hook.
  • Sizes included: US Women's sizes 5 to 12 (grouped as 5-9 and 10-12).
  • Finished measurements: Designed to fit US shoe sizes 5 through 12 with approximately 1/4 to 1/2 inch of comfortable wiggle room.

Pattern Notes

  • Skill Level: Advanced Beginner.
  • This pattern is written in US crochet terms.
  • The item is worked in a seamless spiral for the toe, then flat for the heel and throat.
  • Tension Tip: Keep your stitches relatively firm on the foot base to ensure a sturdy sole, but loosen up your tension when working with the fur yarn to make the stitches easier to feel.
  • Customization Tip: If you want a taller boot, simply repeat the straight rows of the throat section before starting your decrease rows.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Sizing Group 5 to 9 - Starting the Toe

With the 10mm hook, ch 4.

Round 1: Work 2 sc in the second chain from your hook. Work 2 sc in the next chain. Work 3 sc in the very last chain. Now, rotate your work to crochet along the opposite side of your starting chain. Work 2 sc in the first unworked loop, then 2 sc in the next unworked loop. Slip stitch to the first sc to join. (11 sc)

Mentor Tip: To prevent gaps in your toe, insert your hook under one loop for the first stitch, and under the junction where the loops cross for the second stitch.

Round 2: Ch 1 (this does not count as a stitch). *Work 1 sc in the next stitch, then 2 sc in the following stitch. Repeat from * 4 more times. Work 1 sc in the last stitch. Do not join with a slip stitch and do not turn. (16 sc)

Round 3: We will now work in a continuous spiral. Skip the joining chain from the previous round. Work 1 sc directly into the first sc of Round 2. Place your stitch marker here. Work 1 sc in each of the next 15 stitches until you reach the stitch right before your marker. Do not slip stitch or turn. (16 sc)

Round 4: Work 1 sc in the marked stitch, move your marker up into this new stitch, and work 1 sc in each of the next 15 stitches. Do not join or turn. (16 sc)

Round 5 and beyond: Repeat Round 4 until you have completed the required number of rounds for your size:

  • Size 5: 9 rounds total.
  • Sizes 6 & 7: 10 rounds total.
  • Size 8: 11 rounds total.
  • Size 9: 12 rounds total.

Mentor Tip: Use your starting yarn tail to sew shut any tiny gaps at the tip of the toe, then weave it in securely before moving on.

Heel Construction (Sizes 5 to 9)

Slip stitch into the next marked stitch and remove your marker.

Row 1: Ch 1, work 1 sc in the same stitch as the ch 1, then work 1 sc in each of the next 10 stitches. Turn. (11 sc)

Row 2: Ch 1, work 1 sc in the first stitch and in each of the next 10 stitches. Turn. (11 sc)

Row 3: Ch 1, work 1 sc in the first stitch, 2 sc in the next stitch, 1 sc in the next 7 stitches, 2 sc in the next stitch, and 1 sc in the last stitch. Turn. (13 sc)

Row 4: Ch 1, work 1 sc in the first stitch and in each of the next 12 stitches. Turn. (13 sc)

Row 5: Ch 1, work 1 sc in the first stitch, 2 sc in the next stitch, 1 sc in the next 3 stitches, sc3tog across the next 3 stitches, 1 sc in the next 3 stitches, 2 sc in the next stitch, and 1 sc in the last stitch. Turn. (13 sc)

Row 6: Ch 1, work 1 sc in the first stitch and in each of the next 12 stitches. Turn. Do not fasten off your yarn.

Seaming the Slipper (Sizes 5 to 9)

Fold the last row of your heel in half with the right sides facing together.

Work a slip stitch seam along the back of the heel to join the two halves.

Mentor Tip: To keep the seam flat and comfortable under your foot, insert your hook only through the front loop of the front layer and the back loop of the back layer. Slip stitch loosely and end with a slip stitch in the corner.

Repeat all steps above to make your second slipper base.

Leveling Round (Sizes 5 to 9)

We will now work a leveling round around the ankle opening. This round starts at different points for the left and right boots to ensure the wrap-around flaps overlap correctly.

Left Boot: Slip stitch to the top of the 3rd row from the back (counting from the free loops). Work 1 sc in the same spot, 1 sc on top of the next row, and 1 sc in the groove between the 3rd and 4th rows. Work 18 (19 for size 9) more sc stitches around the opening, making a sc2tog at the junction where the heel meets the toe. Do not join or turn. (21 [22 for size 9] sc)

Right Boot: Slip stitch to the top of the 3rd row from the inside of the shoe.

The Throat Section (Sizes 5 to 9)

Note: The inner loop refers to the back loop for the left boot and the front loop for the right boot. This leaves a decorative line of unworked loops on the outside.

Row 1: Work 1 sc in the inner loop of the first stitch of your leveling round. Place a marker in this stitch. Work 1 sc in the inner loop of each stitch across until you reach the stitch right before your marker. Work 1 sc in the free loop in front of the marked stitch, then 1 sc in the next 2 free loops to create an overlap. (24 [25 for size 9] sc)

Row 2: Ch 1 (does not count as a stitch), work 1 sc in the first stitch and in each stitch across to the end, finishing in the marked stitch. Turn. (24 [25 for size 9] sc)

Row 3: Ch 1, work 1 sc in each stitch across. Turn. (24 [25 for size 9] sc)

Rows 4 to 8: Repeat Row 3 until you have 8 rows from the decorative free-loop line.

Row 9: Ch 1, work 1 sc in the first stitch, 2 sc in the next stitch, 1 sc in each stitch across until 2 stitches remain, 2 sc in the next stitch, and 1 sc in the last stitch. Turn. (26 [27 for size 9] sc)

Row 10: Ch 1, work 1 sc in each stitch across. Turn. (26 [27 for size 9] sc)

Row 11: Ch 1, work 1 sc in the first stitch, 1 sc in the next 3 stitches, 2 sc in the next stitch, 1 sc in the next 9 stitches, 2 sc in the next stitch, and 1 sc in each remaining stitch across. Turn. (28 [29 for size 9] sc)

Row 12: Ch 1, work 1 sc in each stitch across. Turn. (28 [29 for size 9] sc)

Row 13: Ch 1, work 1 sc in the first stitch, sc2tog across the next 2 stitches, 1 sc in the next 3 stitches, 2 sc in the next stitch, 1 sc in the next 6 stitches, 2 sc in the next stitch, 1 sc in each stitch across until 3 stitches remain, sc2tog across the next 2 stitches, and 1 sc in the last stitch. Turn. (28 [29 for size 9] sc)

Row 14: Do not make a turning chain. Pull up your active loop slightly to loosen it, work 1 sc directly into the second stitch, work 1 sc in each stitch across until 4 stitches remain, sc2tog across the next 2 stitches, then slip stitch loosely into the last 2 stitches. Fasten off.

Adding the Fur Trim (All Sizes)

Note: Switch to your K (6.5mm) hook and fur yarn. Keep your stitches loose so you can feel them easily.

Insert your hook under just 1 loop along the edge and work 2 sc across the first row end. *Work 3 sc across the next row end, then 2 sc across the next row end. Repeat from * until you reach the top curved corner. Work 6 sc along the curve. • Row 3: Ch 1 and turn. Work 1 sc in each stitch across until you reach the curved corner. Work 2 sc into each of the 3 stitches around the corner. Work 1 sc in each stitch across to the next curved corner. Work 2 sc into each of the 3 stitches around the corner. Work 1 sc in each stitch across to the last stitch. Slip stitch to the last stitch and fasten off.

Right Boot Fur Trim:

  • Row 1: Slip stitch to the outer edge of the flap and work along the edge. Insert your hook under just 1 loop along the edge and work 2 sc across the first row end. *Work 3 sc across the next row end, then 2 sc across the next row end. Repeat from * until you reach the top curved corner. Work 6 sc along the curve. Work 1 sc in each stitch across to the next curved corner. Work 2 sc into each of the 3 stitches around the corner. Work 1 sc in each stitch across until you have about an inch left of the previous row. Fasten off.

Buttons and Button Loops (All Sizes)

Sew your wooden buttons between the 5th and 6th throat rows, and between the 11th and 12th throat rows from the bottom (counting from the decorative free-loop line).

With your F (3.75mm) hook and cotton yarn, chain 35 and fasten off. Make 4 of these loops.

Wrap a loop around each button to find the perfect placement. Pull the ends through to the inside of the boot and tie a secure double knot. Hide your yarn tails inside.

Easy Variations & Custom Ideas

  • Velvet Luxury: Swap the classic blanket yarn for a plush velvet yarn to make a pair similar to my Velvet Crochet Slippers.
  • Toddler Matching Set: Want to make a matching set for your little ones? You can easily scale down this design using my Crochet Toddler Slipper Boots pattern.
  • Baby Snow Boots: For the tiniest members of the family, try making these adorable Classic Baby Snow Boots.
  • Pom-Pom Ties: Instead of wooden buttons, make braided yarn ties finished with fluffy pom-poms for a playful, bohemian vibe.
  • Color Play: Use a contrasting color for the sole and the throat section to create a trendy color-blocked look.
  • Colour ideas: Classic neutrals like cream, charcoal, and taupe look incredibly sophisticated, while rich jewel tones like Merlot or deep teal add a gorgeous pop of color.
  • Yarn substitutions: Any super bulky (Size 6) chenille yarn will work beautifully, such as Premier Yarns Parfait XL or Loops & Threads Sweet Snuggles.

Common Troubleshooting & Fixes

  • Problem: The toe section has large, visible holes where the stitches stretch.
Fix: When working into the foundation chain, make sure to insert your hook deeper under the junction where the loops cross. This extra strand of yarn helps pull the stitches closer together and closes the gap.
  • Problem: I cannot see my stitches when working with the fur yarn.
Fix: Do not rely on your eyes! Use your fingertips to feel for the spaces between the stitches. Keeping your tension loose also makes it much easier to slide your hook into the correct spots.
  • Problem: The boots feel too loose around my ankles and slip down.
Fix: Make sure you work the first 8 rows of the throat section with a tight, firm tension. This creates a snug, supportive collar that holds the boot in place.
  • Problem: My rounds are uneven and I keep losing track of my stitch count.
Fix: Always use a locking stitch marker in the very first stitch of every round when working in a spiral. Move it up as you complete each round so you never lose your starting point.

Care Instructions

To keep your slipper boots looking fluffy and beautiful, I highly recommend hand washing them in cold water with a gentle wool wash. Avoid wringing or twisting the fabric. Instead, gently press out the excess water with a clean towel and lay them flat to dry in the shade. Do not put them in the dryer, as the high heat can ruin the texture of both the chenille and the faux-fur trim.

Final Thoughts

There is nothing quite as satisfying as wearing something beautiful that you made with your own two hands. These cozy boots make the perfect weekend project or a deeply appreciated gift for someone special. Grab your favorite mug of tea, settle into your favorite crochet spot, and enjoy every single stitch!
