Toddler Classic Slipper Boots
Keep active little feet warm and stylish with these double-stranded crochet slipper boots featuring secure double straps and a beautiful shell trim.
There is nothing quite like watching a toddler explore the world.
But keeping those tiny, energetic feet warm can feel like a never-ending battle. Traditional baby booties look adorable, but they rarely stay on for more than five minutes.
If you have ever spent your afternoon hunting for a single kicked-off bootie behind the sofa, you know exactly what I mean. Active toddlers need footwear that can actually keep up with their daily adventures. They need something secure, soft, and incredibly durable.
That is where these high-shaft slipper boots come to the rescue.
Designed with a secure double-strap closure and a sturdy double-stranded sole, they are built to stay put. No matter how much your little one runs, jumps, or climbs, these boots are not going anywhere.
Today, I am thrilled to share this classic toddler boot pattern with you.
We will use two strands of worsted weight yarn held together to create a thick, cushioned sole. This technique gives the bootie a wonderful structure that holds its shape beautifully over time. It is a fantastic step up if you have already mastered simpler footwear projects like our Slippons Crochet Baby Booties.
Why You'll Love This Pattern
- Stays on active feet: The high ankle shaft and functional double straps ensure these boots won't slip off during playtime.
- Extra cozy and durable: Working with two strands of yarn held together creates a thick, plush fabric that cushions little feet and stands up to wear.
- Quick to make: Using a larger hook and double strands means these booties work up much faster than single-strand alternatives.
Materials You'll Need
- Yarn: Worsted weight yarn with a soft texture (such as Lion Brand Vanna's Choice). You will need approximately two skeins, as the pattern is worked holding two strands together.
- Hook: US Size H/8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook, or size needed to obtain gauge.
- Notions: Four wooden buttons (7/8-inch buttons for sizes 5 and 6; 1-inch buttons for sizes 7 and 8), stitch markers (or scraps of contrasting yarn), and a tapestry needle.
- Yardage: Approximately 250–300 yards of worsted weight yarn.
Gauge & Sizing
- Gauge: 12 hdc x 8 rows = 4 inches using an H hook and two strands of yarn held together. Use the finished sole measurements to verify your gauge.
- Sizes included: Toddler sizes 5, 6, 7, and 8.
- Finished measurements:
- Size 5: Sole is 5 inches long and 2.25 to 2.5 inches wide.

Pattern Notes
- Skill Level: Intermediate
- This pattern is written in US crochet terms.
- The sole and toe are worked in continuous rounds without turning.
- Tension Tip: Keep your slip stitches loose when working the transition round between the sole and the upper, as you will need to work into them later.
- Customization Tip: You can easily customize these boots by using contrasting colors for the sole, the body, and the top shell edging.

Round 1: Work 1 sc in the second chain from your hook. Work 1 sc in each chain across until you reach the last chain. Work 3 sc in that final chain. Now, rotate your work to crochet along the opposite side of the foundation chain, placing 1 sc in each free loop across. Join with a slip stitch to the first chain-1. [24 (26) stitches]
Round 2: Chain 1. Work 2 sc in the next stitch, then 1 sc in each of the next 9 (10) stitches. Work 2 sc in each of the next 3 stitches. Round 3: Chain 1. Work 2 sc in the next stitch. Work 1 sc in each of the next 6 (7) stitches, then 1 hdc in each of the next 5 stitches. Work 2 hdc in each of the next 6 stitches. Work 1 hdc in each of the next 5 stitches, then 1 sc in each of the next 5 (6) stitches. Work 2 sc in the next stitch, then 1 sc in the same stitch as your starting chain-1. Join with a slip stitch to the first chain-1. [39 (41) stitches]
Step 2: Transitioning to the Upper (Sizes 5 and 6)
Round 4: Chain 1 and turn your work (this chain-1 acts as your first slip stitch). With the wrong side of the sole now facing you, work 1 loose slip stitch into each stitch around. Join with a slip stitch to the starting chain-1. Turn your work back. [39 (41) slip stitches]
Round 5: Chain 1 (does not count as a stitch). Working only into the slip stitches from the previous round (avoiding the sole stitches), work 1 sc in the same stitch as the chain-1, then 1 sc in each slip stitch around. Join with a slip stitch to the first sc. Do not turn. [39 (41) stitches]
Round 6: Chain 1 (does not count as a stitch). Work 1 sc in the next stitch and in each stitch around, placing a final sc in the same stitch as the starting chain-1. Join with a slip stitch to the first sc. Do not fasten off and do not turn. [39 (41) stitches]
Step 3: Shaping the Toe (Sizes 5 and 6)
Fold the sole flat along the center line and count back 11 stitches on either side to place markers (22 stitches marked symmetrically on the toe side).
Round 7: Chain 1 (does not count as a stitch). Work 1 sc in the next stitch, then 1 sc in each stitch until you are 4 stitches away from your marker. Work a sc2tog decrease, then 1 sc in each of the next 2 stitches. Work 1 hdc in the marked stitch (move your marker up to this new stitch). Work 1 hdc in each of the next 5 stitches. Repeat the sequence of (1 hdc, hdc2tog) a total of 3 times. Work 1 hdc in each of the next 7 stitches, ending in the marked stitch (move your marker up). Work 1 sc in each of the next 2 stitches, then work a sc2tog decrease. Work 1 sc in each remaining stitch across, placing a final sc in the same stitch as the starting chain-1. Join with a slip stitch to the first sc. [34 (36) stitches]
Round 8: Chain 1 (does not count as a stitch). Work 1 sc in the next stitch, then 1 sc in each stitch up to the marker. Work 1 sc in the marked stitch (move marker up). Work a hdc2tog decrease, then repeat (1 hdc, hdc2tog) 5 times. Work 1 sc in the marked stitch (move marker up). Work 1 sc in each remaining stitch across, placing a final sc in the same stitch as the starting chain-1. Join with a slip stitch to the first sc. [28 (30) stitches]
Round 9: Chain 1 (does not count as a stitch). Work 1 sc in the next stitch, then 1 sc in each stitch up to the marker. Work 1 hdc in the marked stitch (move marker up), then 1 hdc in the next stitch. Repeat the sequence of (skip the next stitch, work 1 hdc) a total of 5 times. Work 1 hdc in the marked stitch (move marker up). Work 1 sc in each remaining stitch across, placing a final sc in the same stitch as the starting chain-1. Join with a slip stitch to the first sc. If you are making the right boot, make your final slip stitch into the inner loop of the first sc to leave the outer loop free, and do not fasten off. If you are making the left boot, fasten off here. [23 (25) stitches]
Step 4: Crafting the Shaft and Straps (Sizes 5 and 6)
You will have 8 stitches marked on the toe side. Re-mark them symmetrically by folding the boot and counting back 4 stitches from the center on each side.
Fold the boot flat along the sole's center line to find the back center point. Count 3 stitches from this center point. For the right boot, place a marker 3 stitches to the right of the back center (this aligns with your working yarn). For the left boot, place a marker 3 stitches to the left of the back center.
Round 1 (Size 5): Chain 1 in the marked stitch. Work 1 sc into the inner loop of the same stitch (leaving the outer loop free). Work 1 sc in the inner loop of each of the next 4 stitches. Now, working through both loops, work 1 sc in any remaining stitches before the marked toe stitch. Work 1 sc in the marked stitch, then work a sc2tog, 1 sc, 1 sc, sc2tog, and 1 sc in the marked toe stitch. Work 1 sc in each stitch until you reach the ankle marker. Work 1 sc into the free outer loop of the marked stitch, then 1 sc in each of the next 4 free outer loops to create a double layer. Chain 18 for the strap. [26 stitches, including those in the free loops]
Round 1 (Size 6): Follow the same instructions as Size 5, but work hdc2tog decreases instead of sc2tog on the toe side, and chain 20 for the strap. [28 stitches]
Round 2 (Both Sizes): Turn your work. Work 1 hdc in the third chain from your hook and in each chain across. Continue working 1 hdc in each stitch of the previous round until you spiral all the way in. Turn. [42 (46) stitches]
Round 3 (Both Sizes): Chain 2. Work 1 hdc in each stitch across until 3 stitches remain on the strap. Chain 1, skip 1 stitch, and work 1 hdc in each of the last 2 stitches to create the buttonhole. Turn.
Round 4 (Both Sizes): Slip stitch into the next stitch on the strap, then slip stitch into the next chain. Continue slip stitching in each stitch until you reach the base of the strap. Work a slip stitch and a chain-1 in the next stitch (both in the same stitch). Work 1 sc in each stitch across until you spiral in. Turn.
Round 5 (Both Sizes): Chain 1. Work 1 sc in each stitch until you reach the start of the first strap (the last slip stitch of the previous round). Chain 19 (21 for Size 6) to start the second strap.
Round 6 (Both Sizes): Work 1 hdc in the third chain from your hook and in each chain across. Turn.
Round 7 (Both Sizes): Chain 2. Work 1 hdc in each stitch across until 3 stitches remain on the strap. Chain 1, skip 1 stitch, and work 1 hdc in each of the last 2 stitches. Turn.
Round 8 (Both Sizes): Chain 1. Slip stitch into the next stitch on the strap, then into the next chain. Slip stitch across the strap to its base. Work a slip stitch and a chain-1 in the next stitch (both in the same stitch). Work a sequence of *(1 sc in the next 2 stitches, 2 sc in the next stitch)*, repeating this pattern until you spiral in. If making the left boot, fasten off. If making the right boot, do not fasten off.
Round 9 (Shell Trim - Both Sizes): Turn. Drop one strand of yarn and continue with a single strand. Work the shell pattern: *(Chain 1, skip 1 stitch, work 5 dc in the next stitch, chain 1, skip 1 stitch, work 1 sc in the next stitch)*. Repeat this shell sequence until you reach the base of the two straps, then fasten off. For the left boot, attach a single strand of yarn at the base of the strap and work the same shell sequence around until you spiral in. Fasten off.

Work 1 sc in each remaining stitch across, placing a final sc in the same stitch as the starting chain-1. Join with a slip stitch to the first sc. If you are making the right boot, make the last slip stitch into the inner loop of the first sc to leave the outer loop free, and do not fasten off. If you are making the left boot, fasten off here. [24 (28) stitches]
Step 8: Crafting the Shaft and Straps (Sizes 7 and 8)
You will have 9 stitches marked on the toe side. Re-mark them symmetrically by folding the shoe, leaving one odd stitch at the tip, and counting back 4 stitches on either side.
Fold the boot flat to find the back center point. Count 3 stitches from this center point. For the right boot, place a marker 3 stitches to the right of the back center (aligns with your working yarn). For the left boot, place a marker 3 stitches to the left of the back center.
Round 1 (Size 7): Chain 1 in the marked stitch. Work 1 hdc into the inner loop of the same stitch (leaving the outer loop free). Work 1 hdc into the inner loop of each of the next 4 stitches. Now, working through both loops, work 1 hdc in any remaining stitches before the marked toe stitch. Work 1 sc in the marked stitch, then 1 sc in the next stitch. Work a sc2tog, 1 sc, sc2tog, 1 sc, and 1 sc in the marked toe stitch. Work 1 hdc in each stitch until you reach the ankle marker. [27 stitches, including those in the free loops]
Round 1 (Size 8): Follow the same instructions as Size 7, but work a toe decrease sequence of: 1 sc in marked stitch, 1 dc, dc2tog, 1 dc, dc2tog, 1 dc, and 1 sc in the marked toe stitch. Chain 22 for the strap. [31 stitches]
Round 2 (Both Sizes): Turn. Work 1 hdc in the third chain from your hook and in each chain across. Continue working 1 hdc in each stitch of the previous round until you spiral all the way in. Turn. [45 (51) stitches]
Round 3 (Both Sizes): Chain 2. Work 1 hdc in each stitch across until 4 stitches remain on the strap. Chain 2, skip 2 stitches, and work 1 hdc in each of the last 2 stitches to create the buttonhole. Turn.
Round 4 (Both Sizes): Slip stitch into the next stitch on the strap, then slip stitch into the next 2 chains. Continue slip stitching in each stitch until you reach the base of the strap. Work a slip stitch and a chain-1 in the next stitch (both in the same stitch). Work 1 sc in each stitch across until you spiral all the way in. Turn.
Round 5 (Both Sizes): Chain 1. Work 1 sc in each stitch until you reach the start of the first strap (the last slip stitch of the previous round). Chain 20 (22 for Size 8) to start the second strap.
Round 6 (Both Sizes): Work 1 hdc in the third chain from your hook and in each chain across. Turn.
Round 7 (Both Sizes): Chain 2. Work 1 hdc in each stitch across until 4 stitches remain on the strap. Chain 2, skip 2 stitches, and work 1 hdc in each of the last 2 stitches. Turn.
Round 8 (Both Sizes): Chain 1. Slip stitch into the next stitch on the strap, then into the next chain. Slip stitch across the strap to its base. Work a slip stitch and a chain-1 in the next stitch (both in the same stitch).
For the left boot, attach a single strand of yarn at the base of the strap and work the same shell sequence around until you spiral all the way in. Fasten off.
Easy Variations & Custom Ideas
- Contrast Soles: Crochet the soles in a darker, dirt-hiding color like charcoal or navy, and use a bright pastel for the upper boot.
- Faux Fur Trim: Instead of the single-strand shell stitch, finish the top edge with a row of fluffy faux fur yarn using single crochet. This is a great alternative to our Baby Furry Boots Crochet pattern.
- Single Strap Option: For a quicker project, you can stop after completing the first strap and skip the second set of strap repeats.
- Festive Holiday Boots: Work these in bright red with a white fluffy trim to make adorable Santa boots for Christmas morning.
- Non-Slip Soles: Apply puff paint dots or silicone sealant to the bottoms of the soles once finished to give your toddler extra traction on hardwood floors.
- Yarn Substitutions: Any sturdy, machine-washable worsted weight acrylic yarn will work beautifully. Excellent alternatives include Red Heart Super Saver or Paintbox Yarns Simply Aran.
Common Troubleshooting & Fixes
- Problem: The slipper soles are curling up dramatically before I even start the upper.
Fix: A slight curl is normal, but severe curling means your tension is too tight. Try switching to a larger hook size for the sole, or make sure you aren't pulling your stitches too tight. - Problem: The boots look lopsided or the toe shaping is off-center.
Fix: This happens when stitch markers aren't placed symmetrically. Always fold the sole exactly in half to find the center point before counting back to place your markers. - Problem: I am struggling to work into the slip stitch round.
Fix: Keep those slip stitches in Round 4 incredibly loose. If you struggle, use a hook one size larger just for that single round. - Problem: The straps are too short to wrap around my toddler's ankle comfortably.
Fix: Toddler ankles vary in chubbiness! Simply add 2 to 4 extra chains to your starting strap chain, making sure to adjust your stitch counts accordingly.
Care Instructions
To keep these boots looking their best, machine wash them on a gentle, cold cycle inside a mesh laundry bag. Lay them flat to air dry so they maintain their shape. Avoid tumble drying, as high heat can cause acrylic fibers to frizz or shrink.
