Lux Triangle Shawl, Free Lacy Scarf Pattern

Have you ever started a project with high hopes, only to watch it shrink into something resembling a doll blanket?

I certainly have.

When I first designed this wrap, it turned out way too small to drape comfortably over my shoulders. I didn't give up, though. I crocheted another ten rows and joined them together, but it still lacked the cozy drape I wanted.

Finally, on my third attempt, I added nine more rows. Success! It was the perfect size.

Sometimes, we just need a little trial and error to get things right.

This design is incredibly relaxing once you get past the initial setup. You won't need to constantly count stitches, making it the perfect companion for a cozy evening of movie-watching.

It is a wonderfully versatile accessory. You can wear it draped over your shoulders, bundled around your neck like a cozy scarf, or even styled as a chic head wrap.

If you are looking for a heartfelt handmade gift, this project makes a stunning present for Mother's Day or a special friend.

Pattern Notes

  • Skill Level: Advanced Beginner

  • The item is worked flat, decreasing gradually to form a triangle.
  • Keep your slip stitches loose at the beginning of the rows so your edges do not pull or pucker.
  • If you want a larger shawl, you can start with a longer initial chain that is a multiple of 6 + 2.

Completing the Body and Finishing

Subsequent Rows: Repeat Rows 2 through 7 in sequence until you reach a row that has only 2 chain-5 loops remaining.

Final Row: Slip stitch into the first 2 chains, work 5 double crochets in the next single crochet, then work a single crochet into the third chain of the next chain-5 loop. Fasten off your yarn.

Adding Tassels and Finishing Touches

Weave in all remaining yarn tails securely.

To make the tassels, cut 10 strands of yarn, each measuring 9.5 inches long. Fold the bundle of strands in half to create a loop. Pull this loop through the edge of the shawl, then pull the loose ends of the strands through the loop to tighten. Trim the ends evenly.

Attach the first tassel directly to the center shell at the bottom point (vertex) of your triangle. Skip the first 4 rows and attach the second tassel to the 5th row. From there, skip every two rows and attach a tassel to the third row along the edges.

Easy Variations & Custom Ideas

  • Lighter Summer Wrap: Swap the DK yarn for a fingering weight yarn to create an ultra-breezy wrap similar to our Summer Nights Shawl.
  • Solid Border: Instead of tassels, work a row of single crochet or picot stitches along the diagonal edges for a clean, structured finish.
  • Color Blocking: Use a self-striping yarn cake or change colors every six rows to create bold, modern stripes.
  • Scarf Style: If you prefer a narrower accessory, check out our Rose Petals Triangle Scarf or the Suri Lacy Scarf for alternative drape styles.
  • Cozy Winter Version: Use a worsted weight alpaca blend yarn to make a warmer, plush version for chilly autumn days.
  • Colour ideas: Soft pastels like lavender, mint, or peach look stunning for spring, while deep jewel tones like emerald or burgundy make a dramatic statement.
  • Yarn substitutions: Any standard sport weight or light worsted weight yarn will work beautifully if you adjust your hook size to match.

Common Troubleshooting & Fixes

  • Problem: The edges of my shawl are curling or pulling too tight.
Fix: Your slip stitches at the beginning of the rows might be too tight. Focus on keeping these stitches loose, or use a hook one size larger just for the slip stitches.
  • Problem: My triangle shape looks lopsided.
Fix: Double-check your stitch counts at the end of each row repeat. Missing a chain loop or a shell during the decrease rows will throw off the symmetry.
  • Problem: The shawl is turning out much smaller than the finished measurements.
Fix: Your tension might be tighter than mine. Try switching to a larger hook (like a 4.0mm or 4.5mm) to open up the lace pattern.
  • Problem: My tassels look messy and uneven.
Fix: Steam your tassels lightly with a garment steamer or iron (don't touch the acrylic yarn directly!) to straighten the strands before trimming them.

Care Instructions

To keep your lacy stitches looking their best, I highly recommend hand washing your shawl in cool water with a gentle wool wash. Lay it flat on a clean towel, shape it into a perfect triangle, and let it air dry. Avoid hanging it while wet, as the weight of the water can stretch out the delicate lace.

Final Thoughts

There is something incredibly satisfying about watching a beautiful lace pattern grow from a simple chain. Don't let my initial sizing struggles discourage you—crochet is all about the journey, and sometimes we have to rip out a few rows to get to perfection. Grab your favorite yarn, find a cozy spot, and enjoy every single stitch of this beautiful project!
