Wrap yourself in a cloud of color with this lightweight, airy triangle shawl that uses just one cake of DK weight yarn.

Summer Nights Shawl

Have you ever wanted a crochet project that feels like absolute magic on your shoulders? Summer evenings often bring a gentle breeze, leaving you wishing for a light layer that doesn't feel heavy or stifling.

Finding that perfect balance is tough. Most winter wraps are far too chunky, while lace patterns can sometimes feel incredibly fussy to stitch up when you just want to relax.

That is where this airy triangle wrap comes in. It uses clever stitch placement to create a breezy, breathable fabric that drapes beautifully without weighing you down.

Today, I am thrilled to share my favorite design for warm-weather layering. It is a wonderful project to work on while sitting on the porch with a cold glass of iced tea.

Best of all, it only takes a single cake of yarn to complete. You will watch the colors shift effortlessly as you work your way down to the delicate pointed edge.

Why You'll Love This Pattern

  • One-Skein Wonder: You only need a single cake of self-striping yarn to achieve a stunning, multi-colored look without weaving in dozens of ends.
  • Easy to Customize: The simple four-row repeat allows you to keep crocheting until your wrap reaches your perfect size.
  • Lightweight Drape: The open stitchwork creates a breathable accessory that is ideal for spring, summer, and early autumn.

Materials You'll Need

  • Yarn: Lion Brand Mandala (100% Acrylic, DK weight, 590 yards/540 meters per cake); 1 cake in the color Valkyrie.
  • Hook: Size G (4.0 mm) crochet hook, or size needed to obtain drape.
  • Notions: Tapestry needle for weaving in yarn tails, and scissors.
  • Yardage: Approximately 590 yards for the standard size.

Gauge & Sizing

  • Gauge: 9 double crochet stitches = 2 inches. However, exact gauge is not critical for this project; focus on achieving a loose, flowing fabric.
  • Sizes included: One size, easily adjustable.
  • Finished measurements: Approximately 46 inches wide across the top edge and 24 inches deep from the top center to the bottom point.

Growing Your Shawl

To make your shawl as large as you like, simply keep repeating Rows 10 through 13. With every full repetition of this four-row block, you will work the pattern sections between the asterisks (*) one additional time. Once you reach your desired size, fasten off and weave in your ends.

Easy Variations & Custom Ideas

  • Add a Tassel Border: Give your finished wrap a bohemian flair by attaching large tassels to the three corners of the triangle.
  • Go Solid or Striped: While self-striping cakes do the work for you, you can also use solid colors or manually change colors every few rows to create bold stripes. If you want a different style of lacy wrap, you might also enjoy the Suri Lacy Scarf.
  • Yarn Weight Swaps: You can easily adapt this pattern for a warmer, winter-ready version by using a worsted weight yarn and a larger hook, such as an I (5.5mm) or J (6.0mm).
  • Make it a Pocket Shawl: Crochet two simple squares and sew them onto the front panels of the wrap to keep your hands warm.
  • Add a Picot Edging: For a more delicate finish, work a simple picot border along the bottom diagonal edges on your final row. If you love triangle shapes, check out the Lux Triangle Shawl.
  • Colour ideas: Try soft pastel gradients for spring, bright jewel tones for summer nights, or rich earthy tones like rust and mustard for autumn.
  • Yarn substitutions: Any standard DK weight (Category 3) yarn will work beautifully. Excellent alternatives include Caron Skinny Cakes, Stylecraft Special DK, or Premier Yarns Cotton Fair for an even lighter cotton-blend feel.

Common Troubleshooting & Fixes

  • Problem: The top edge of my shawl is curling inward.
Fix: This usually happens if your turning chains or edge stitches are too tight. Try to consciously loosen your tension on the first and last few stitches of each row, or use a hook one size larger for your starting chain.
  • Problem: My stitch counts are off at the end of a row.
Fix: It is incredibly easy to miss a chain-1 space or skip too many stitches around the shells. Use stitch markers to mark your center chain-2 space and count your shells on each side to ensure they are symmetrical.
  • Problem: The center point of the triangle looks blunt rather than sharp.
Fix: Make sure you are working the full center increase sequence (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) directly into the chain-2 space of the previous row, rather than into the stitches next to it.
  • Problem: The fabric feels stiff and doesn't drape well.
Fix: You might be crocheting too tightly. Try switching to a larger hook size, such as a 4.5mm or 5.0mm, to give the stitches more breathing room.

Care Instructions

To keep your handmade wrap looking its best, I highly recommend hand washing it in cool water with a gentle wool wash. Gently squeeze out the excess water by rolling it in a clean towel—never wring or twist your crochet work. Lay the shawl flat on a blocking mat or dry towel, shaping the points and pinning them down to open up the beautiful lace pattern. Allow it to air dry completely before wearing.

Final Thoughts

There is nothing quite like the satisfaction of watching a beautiful cake of yarn transform into a wearable work of art. This project is perfect for relaxing on the couch, listening to an audiobook, or chatting with friends at your local stitch group.
