Happy Feet Baby Sandals
Keep those tiny toes stylish and comfortable all summer long with these adorable, double-soled crochet baby sandals.
There is nothing sweeter than baby feet, especially when they are dressed up for warm summer days.
But let's be honest: finding baby footwear that actually stays on those wiggly feet can be a real challenge. Most store-bought booties slip off the second your little one starts kicking.
I remember making my very first pair of baby shoes years ago. One turned out perfect, but the other looked like it belonged to a giant! It is a classic beginner mistake to relax your tension on the second shoe.
That is why I designed these sandals with a sturdy, double-layered sole and an adjustable ankle strap. They are built to stay put, whether paired with a cute summer outfit or a lovely Easy Crochet Baby Dress.
Today, we are making these cheerful sandals using a mix of worsted weight yarn for the soles and colorful DK yarn for the decorative tops. Let's grab our hooks and get started!
Why You'll Love This Pattern
- Double-Layered Soles: This clever design provides excellent structure and durability, making them feel like real little shoes.
- Secure Fit: The built-in ankle-strap tube ensures the sandals stay firmly on active, kicking feet.
- Scrap-Friendly: You only need tiny amounts of colorful DK yarn, making this a fantastic project for busting your stash.

- The soles are worked in continuous rounds without turning, while the ankle straps are worked flat.

Joining the Soles Together
To create a sturdy, double-layered sole, hold one white sole and one beige sole together with their wrong sides facing.
Using your F hook and the DK yarn color chosen for the outer edge of your toe top, slip stitch through both layers all the way around the edge. Fasten off and weave in your tails. Repeat for the second sandal.
Crafting the Triangle Toe Tops (Make 2)
Note on hooks: Use an E hook for the 3-6 month size, and an F hook for the 6-9 and 9-12 month sizes.
Round 1: Start with a magic ring. Ch 2 (counts as first hdc). Work 2 hdc, ch 3, 3 hdc, ch 3, 3 hdc, ch 3 into the ring. Pull the yarn tail firmly to close the ring. Join with a sl st to the top of your beginning ch-2. Fasten off.
Round 2: Join your second color with a sl st into any ch-3 corner space. Ch 2 (counts as first hdc). Work 2 hdc, ch 3, 3 hdc into that same corner space. *[Ch 2, then work (3 hdc, ch 3, 3 hdc) into the next ch-3 space]. Repeat from * once more. Ch 2, then join with a sl st to the top of your beginning ch-2. Fasten off.
Round 3: Join your third color with a sl st into any ch-3 corner space. Work 3 sc in that same space. *[Work 1 sc in each of the next 3 hdc stitches, 2 sc in the next ch-2 space, 1 sc in each of the next 3 hdc stitches, then work (1 sc, ch 1, 1 sc) into the next ch-3 corner space]. Repeat from * once more. Work 1 sc in each of the next 3 hdc stitches, 2 sc in the next ch-2 space, 1 sc in each of the next 3 hdc stitches. Join with a sl st to the first sc, then sl st into the next sc. Do not fasten off; you will use this working yarn to attach the piece to the sole. Securely knot and weave in all other loose ends.
Attaching the Toe Top and Straps (Right Sandal)
Fold your joined sole in half lengthwise to find the exact center of the heel. Count back 9 (9, 10) stitches from the center on both sides and place stitch markers. This marks the 18 (18, 20) heel stitches symmetrically. Switch back to your F hook if you were using an E hook.
With the working yarn still attached to your triangle toe top, ch 3. Slip stitch this chain directly to the front-center of your top sole to form the toe strap.
Work back up the chain by making 1 sc in each of the 3 chains. Slip stitch along the side of the triangle until you reach the next corner.
Ch 3 to create the side strap. Slip stitch this to your marked stitch on the sole, then slip stitch into the very next stitch toward the heel.
Work back up the side strap by making 1 sc in each of the 3 chains.
Ch 23 (25, 29) to create the long back strap. Turn your work and slip stitch into the 5th chain from your hook (this forms your buttonhole loop). Slip stitch in each remaining chain across.
Slip stitch back to the triangle toe top. Work a line of slip stitches along the bottom edge of the triangle until you reach the opposite corner.
Ch 3 for the second side strap. Slip stitch to the marked stitch on the sole, then slip stitch into the next stitch toward the heel. Work back up the strap with 1 sc in each of the 3 chains.
Work slip stitches along the final side of the triangle until you reach the toe strap. Fasten off, leaving a long tail.
Thread your long tail onto a yarn needle. Sew down through the toe strap and both layers of the sole, then back up to reinforce it. Knot securely underneath and hide the tail between the sole layers.
Attaching the Toe Top and Straps (Left Sandal)
Mark the 18 (18, 20) heel stitches on your second sole exactly as you did for the right sandal.
Ch 3 from the triangle toe top and slip stitch to the front-center of the sole. Work 1 sc in each of the 3 chains back up to the triangle. Slip stitch along the side of the triangle to the next corner.
Ch 3 for the first side strap. Slip stitch to the marked stitch on the sole, then slip stitch into the next stitch toward the heel. Work 1 sc in each of the 3 chains back up.
Slip stitch to the triangle, then work slip stitches along the bottom edge of the triangle to the next corner.
Ch 3 for the second side strap. Slip stitch to the marked stitch on the sole, then slip stitch into the next stitch toward the heel. Work 1 sc in each of the 3 chains back up.
Ch 23 (25, 29) for the back strap. Turn, slip stitch into the 5th chain from your hook, and slip stitch in each remaining chain across.
Slip stitch to the triangle toe top, then work slip stitches along the final side of the triangle until you reach the toe strap. Fasten off with a long tail and reinforce the toe strap just like the right sandal.
Crocheting the Ankle Back (Both Sandals)
Locate the 4 center stitches at the back of the heel.
Row 1: Join your toe top yarn color with a slip stitch to the first of these 4 stitches. Work 1 sc in the same stitch, then 1 sc in each of the next 3 stitches. Turn. [4 sc]
Row 2: Ch 1 (does not count as a stitch). Work 1 sc in each of the 4 stitches across. Turn. [4 sc]
Rows 3-16 (19, 21): Repeat Row 2 until this back strip measures 3 1/4 (3 3/4, 4) inches. Do not fasten off.
Assembly: Fold this strip over toward the inside of the sole to create a tube. Slip stitch the two layers together near the sole. Fasten off, leaving a 20-inch tail.
Sewing: Thread the tail onto your needle. Sew along the base of this ankle piece, going through both the tube layers and the double sole layers to secure it. Sew up the right side of the tube, across the top (just under the opening so you don't block the strap), and down the left side. Slide your long back strap through this tube, sew a button onto the side of the triangle toe top, and your sandal is complete!
Easy Variations & Custom Ideas
- Boy-Friendly Style: Swap the colorful triangle top for a solid neutral shade to make a handsome pair of Trekkers Baby Sandals.
- Alternative Summer Footwear: If you prefer a closed-toe look, try the Slippons Crochet Baby Booties.
- Floral Embellishments: Sew a tiny crochet flower onto the triangle top instead of a button for a sweet, feminine touch.
- Color Ideas: Try a nautical theme with navy, red, and white, or go pastel with mint, lavender, and soft pink.
- Yarn Substitutions: Any sturdy category 4 worsted cotton yarn works beautifully for the soles, and any category 3 sport weight cotton or bamboo blend is perfect for the tops.
Common Troubleshooting & Fixes
- Problem: One sandal is noticeably larger than the other.
Fix: This is incredibly common! Our hands naturally relax as we get comfortable with a pattern. Always crochet both soles first before moving on to the straps to ensure your tension remains identical. - Problem: The back strap is too loose or too tight around the baby's ankle.
Fix: You can easily adjust the length of the back strap by adding or subtracting chains to the initial chain of 23 (25, 29) before working your slip stitches back down. - Problem: The magic ring on the toe top is starting to unravel.
Fix: When working with baby items, secure ends are crucial. Tie a double knot with your starting tail around a nearby stitch on the wrong side before weaving it in securely in multiple directions. - Problem: The sole is too floppy and doesn't hold its shape.
Fix: Make sure you are using a stiff worsted weight yarn (like a classic acrylic or cotton) and keeping your stitches tight. If your stitches are naturally loose, drop down a hook size to a 3.5 mm (E) hook for the soles.
