Keep your little adventurer's feet cool and stylish with these adorable, sturdy crochet baby boy sandals featuring a double-layered sole and a sporty toe-strap design.

Trekkers Baby Boy Sandals

Have you ever noticed how incredibly hard it is to find cute, practical footwear patterns designed specifically for baby boys?

Most baby shoe patterns lean heavily toward delicate booties or highly decorative designs. When summer rolls around, those thick, enclosed booties just make tiny feet sweaty and uncomfortable, while flimsy single-soled sandals offer zero structure and slip off constantly.

That is exactly why I designed these double-soled strappy sandals. By crocheting two separate soles and joining them together, you create a wonderfully thick, cushioned base that mimics a real shoe. It keeps its shape beautifully, protects tiny toes, and actually stays on wriggly feet.

Meet the Trekkers.

This project is a fantastic way to play with contrasting colors. I love using a neutral gray for the rugged soles and a vibrant, bright shade for the sporty straps to make them pop. If you have enjoyed making my Slippons Crochet Baby Booties, you will find this summer alternative an absolute joy to stitch up.

Why You'll Love This Pattern

  • Double-Layered Soles: Provides amazing structure, durability, and a professional finish that keeps the sandals from twisting.
  • Stay-On Design: The clever heel-to-toe strap construction ensures these sandals actually stay securely on active baby feet.
  • Sizing Versatility: Includes clear instructions for four distinct sizes, covering newborns all the way up to active twelve-month-olds.

Materials You'll Need

  • Yarn: Worsted weight or Aran yarn (Medium weight category 4) in two colors: a neutral gray for the soles and a bright contrasting color for the upper straps.
  • Hook: F (3.75 mm) hook for all sizes; G (4.25 mm) hook needed additionally for sizes 6-9 months and 9-12 months.
  • Notions: Tapestry needle for weaving in ends, stitch markers.
  • Yardage:
    • Sizes 0-3 & 3-6 months: 55 yards of gray and 30 yards of accent color.
    • Sizes 6-9 & 9-12 months: 70 yards of gray and 30 yards of accent color.

Pattern Notes

  • Skill Level: Intermediate.
  • This pattern is written in US crochet terms.
  • The item is worked in the round without turning for the soles, with partial rounds used for the heel shaping.
  • Tension Tip: Keep your slip stitches relaxed when joining the soles together, as you will need to work the upper straps directly into these stitches later.
  • Customization Tip: Work both left and right soles at the same time (alternating rounds) to ensure your tension remains perfectly consistent for both sandals.

Joining the Soles (All Sizes)

Place two soles together with their wrong sides facing each other.

Using your bright accent color yarn, start at the toe side. Work slip stitches through both layers all the way around to join them, creating a decorative border.

Use F hook for 0-3 and 3-6 months; use G hook for 6-9 and 9-12 months.

Tuck all yarn tails inside between the two soles before you finish slip stitching. Do not work these slip stitches too tightly! (40 (43, 45, 49) sl sts)

Upper Straps - Right Sandal (0-3 and 3-6 Months)

Preparation: Fold the sole lengthwise to find the center line. Count back 5 stitches from the center heel on each side and place stitch markers. This marks 10 stitches symmetrically across the heel. Place another marker on the sole to indicate where the toe strap will join.

Round 1: Using F hook, join bright yarn with a sl st to the marked stitch on the right side of the heel. Ch 2 (does not count as a stitch), 1 dc in same marked st, dc2tog, 1 dc in next 4 sts, dc2tog, 1 dc in the next marked st.

Ch 3 (4), skip 3 (4) sts, 1 dc in next 2 sts.

Ch 9 (10) for the toe strap. Slip stitch this chain to the sole at the marked toe point, inserting your hook through both sole layers.

Work back along this chain: sl st in the first 3 chains (this forms the toe post).

Ch 6 (7) for the opposite strap.

Skip 20 (21) stitches from the last dc worked on the heel, then work 1 dc in the next 2 sts.

Ch 3 (4), skip 3 (4) sts, sl st to the first dc of the round. Do not turn.

Round 2: Ch 1, 1 sc in same st, 1 hdc in next st, hdc2tog across next 2 sts, hdc2tog across next 2 sts again, 1 hdc in next st, 1 sc in next st.

Work 1 sc in each of the next 4 chains of the loop, 1 sc in next 2 dc.

Work 1 sc in next 5 (6) chains of the toe strap, sc2tog across the 2 chains on either side of the toe post, ch 1 to close the decrease.

Work 1 sc in next 5 (6) chains (twist the strap slightly to keep the right side facing up), 1 sc in next 2 dc, 1 sc in the next 4 chains. Do not turn.

Round 3 (Partial Round - Heel Only): 1 hdc in next sc on the heel side, 1 hdc in next 5 sts, sl st in next st. Turn.

Round 4 (Partial Round - Heel Only): Ch 1, 1 sc in next st, 1 hdc in next 4 sts, 1 sc in next st, sl st in next st. Fasten off.

Upper Straps - Left Sandal (0-3 and 3-6 Months)

Work exactly as the right sandal, but slip stitch the toe strap chain to the sole at the mirrored left-side marker point.

Finishing Touches (All Sizes)

Step 1: Using gray yarn and your designated hook (F for smaller sizes, G for larger sizes), join yarn at the heel side. Work a clean round of slip stitches through the outer (back) loops only around the top opening of the sandal. Fasten off.

Step 2: To prevent the gray slip stitch border from unraveling, thread the yarn tail onto a tapestry needle. Carefully weave it down through the inner layer of stitches on the heel side until you reach the sole.

Step 3: Insert the needle directly between the two joined sole layers. Pull the yarn tail through, tug it slightly, and snip it close to the sole so it hides inside. Repeat this process for all remaining yarn tails.

Easy Variations & Custom Ideas

  • Sporty Stripes: Add a thin stripe of a third color to the outer edge of the sole. You can learn how to make clean transitions with my guide on Seamless Round Color Changes.
  • Girly Twist: Swap the sporty gray and bright colors for pastel pink and white, and add a tiny crochet flower to the toe strap. For a similar feminine vibe, check out my Fern Baby Sandals Pattern.
  • Wooden Button Accent: Sew a small decorative wooden button onto the side strap where it meets the heel for a rustic, boutique-style look.
  • Closed-Toe Modification: If you prefer a bit more toe protection, you can try my Peep-toe Sandals for Boys which offer a slightly different front coverage.
  • Matching Sun Hat: Pair these sandals with a matching cotton sun hat in the same bright accent color for the ultimate summer baby gift set.
  • Colour ideas: Navy blue soles with lime green straps, chocolate brown soles with cream straps, or charcoal gray soles with a bright turquoise upper.
  • Yarn substitutions: Any sturdy, non-splitty 100% cotton worsted weight yarn (like Sable Sugar'n Cream or Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran) works beautifully to give the sandals extra structure.

Common Troubleshooting & Fixes

  • Problem: The soles are curling up like little bowls.
Fix: This usually happens if your tension is too tight. Try switching to a hook one size larger (like a 4.0 mm) for the soles, or consciously relax your hands while working the rounds.
  • Problem: The slip stitch border joining the soles is puckering.
Fix: You worked the slip stitches too tightly. Pull them out and redo the join using a very loose tension, or use a hook that is half a millimeter larger just for the slip stitch round.
  • Problem: The left and right sandals look identical instead of mirrored.
Fix: Double-check your toe strap placement. The right sandal has the toe strap slip-stitched to the right side of the sole, while the left sandal must have it slip-stitched to the left side.
  • Problem: The straps are too loose and floppy on the baby's foot.
Fix: Simply reduce the number of chains in your initial strap chains by 1 or 2 stitches. This will snug up the fit without altering the rest of the pattern.

Care Instructions

To keep these handmade sandals looking their best, hand wash them in cool water with a mild baby-safe detergent. Gently reshape the soles and straps while damp, and lay them flat on a clean towel to air dry completely. Avoid machine washing or tumble drying, as this can cause the yarn to pill or shrink.

Final Thoughts

There is nothing quite as satisfying as seeing a tiny pair of shoes you made yourself on a happy baby's feet. These Trekkers sandals are durable, adorable, and incredibly rewarding to make. Don't worry if the strap joining feels a bit fiddly on your first try—take your time, use your stitch markers, and you'll have a gorgeous finished pair in no time. Happy crocheting, my friends!
