Crochet Baby Flip Flops Free Pattern

There is nothing quite like the sight of tiny baby feet. Except, of course, those same little feet wearing miniature summer sandals.

But finding baby shoes that actually stay on and do not make little feet sweat can be a real challenge. Store-bought plastic shoes are often too stiff, rubbing sensitive skin raw.

That is where these handmade cotton flip flops come to the rescue. They are incredibly soft, breathable, and designed to hug chubby little ankles gently.

I still remember the first pair of baby booties I ever made. They looked more like potato sacks than shoes! But don't worry, I have refined this design so you can avoid my early mistakes.

This pattern uses double-layered soles to give the sandals structure and comfort. We will walk through the steps together, from the sturdy base to the cute little toe post.

If you want to make a complete summer outfit, you can pair these sandals with a matching Briar Sun Hat Pattern. It makes the ultimate baby shower gift!

Why You'll Love This Pattern

  • Double-thick soles: Two layers stitched together mean extra cushioning and a sandal that keeps its shape.
  • No-slip straps: The heel strap design ensures these actually stay on active little feet.
  • Quick to make: You can easily finish a complete pair in just one evening.

Materials You'll Need

  • Yarn: Worsted weight / Aran yarn (Medium weight category 4) in two primary colors. You will also need tiny scraps of worsted weight yarn in three contrasting colors if you want to add the decorative flowers.
  • Hook: Size F (3.75 mm) for the 0-3 month size. For sizes 3-6, 6-9, and 9-12 months, you will need both size F (3.75 mm) and size G (4.25 mm) hooks. Note that all soles are made using the F hook.
  • Notions: A sturdy yarn needle for hiding your ends, stitch markers to track your strap placement, and optional small buttons for the flower centers.
  • Yardage: Less than 100 yards of main colors. This is a fantastic scrap-buster project!

Pattern Notes

  • Skill Level: Advanced Beginner.
  • This pattern is written in US crochet terms.
  • The item is worked in the round for the soles, and flat/joined for the straps.
  • Tension Tip: Keep your slip stitches around the sole border moderately loose. If they are too tight, the sole will curl up like a bowl.
  • Customization Tip: Work both left and right soles at the same time (row by row or step by step) to ensure your tension matches perfectly and both sandals turn out the exact same size.

Tuck all your loose yarn tails inside between the two soles before you close them up. This saves you tons of time Weaving Crochet Tails later!

Right Sandal Straps

Fold your joined sole in half lengthwise to find the center line. Count back 7 (7, 7, 8) stitches from the center line on both sides of the heel. Place stitch markers to mark these 14 (14, 14, 16) heel stitches.

Use F hook for 0-3 months, and G hook for larger sizes.

Right Side Strap: Join yarn with a slip stitch at the right-side marker. Work 1 sc in the same stitch, then 1 sc in each of the next 2 stitches. Turn. (3 stitches)

Chain 1. Work 1 sc in the first stitch, then 1 hdc in each of the next 2 stitches. Fasten off. (3 stitches, excluding starting chain)

Left Side Strap and Top Strap

Left Side Strap: Join yarn with a slip stitch at the left-side marker. Work 1 sc in the same stitch, then 1 sc in each of the next 2 stitches. Turn. (3 stitches)

Chain 1. Work 1 sc in the first stitch, then 1 hdc in each of the next 2 stitches. Turn. (3 stitches)

Chain 2. Work 1 dc in the first stitch, 1 hdc in the next stitch, and slip stitch in the last stitch. Do not fasten off.

Top Strap (Toe Post): Mark the center toe point on your sole. Chain 12 (12, 13, 13). Slip stitch directly into the marked toe point on the sole, inserting your hook through both sole layers.

Work back up the chain you just made: slip stitch in the first 3 chains (this forms the toe post). Chain 9 (9, 10, 10) for the right-side strap connection.

Slip stitch into the first stitch on top of the right side strap. Work 1 hdc in the next stitch, then work (1 hdc, 1 dc) in the last stitch of the side strap.

Back Strap: Chain 12 (12, 12, 13). Turn the sandal so the left side strap is facing you. Slip stitch to the top right corner of the left side strap (top of chain-2). Slip stitch in the next 3 stitches across the top of the side strap.

Strap Edging & Bumps

Work a sc2tog decrease across the two chains on either side of the toe post. *Work 1 tr in the next chain, then 1 sc in the next chain; repeat from * 4 times total (ending in the last chain before the right side strap).

For 6-9 and 9-12 Months: Work 1 sc in each of the first 2 chains. *Work 1 tr in the next chain, then 1 sc in the next chain; repeat from * 3 times total. Work 1 tr in the next chain. Work a sc2tog decrease across the two chains on either side of the toe post. *Work 1 tr in the next chain, then 1 sc in the next chain; repeat from * 4 times total.

Finishing the Straps: Work 1 slip stitch in each stitch across the top of the side strap. Slip stitch in each chain of the back strap. Slip stitch to the top right corner of the left side strap. Fasten off.

Left Sandal

Follow the exact same instructions as the right sandal. The only difference is when you slip stitch the toe post chain to the sole, make sure to slip stitch slightly to the right of the center line to mirror the right shoe.

Decorative Flowers (Optional)

Using F hook and your chosen flower yarn color, make a magic loop.

Petal: (Chain 1, work 1 hdc into the loop, chain 1, slip stitch into the loop). This makes one petal.

Repeat the petal steps 4 more times inside the magic loop (5 petals total). Pull the loop tight, fasten off, and weave in your ends. Make three flowers in coordinating colors.

Securely sew the flowers onto the side strap of each sandal. If using buttons for the flower centers, ensure they are sewn on extremely tightly to prevent any choking hazards.

Easy Variations & Custom Ideas

  • Contrast Border: Use a bright, contrasting color for the slip-stitch border around the sole to make the design pop.
  • No-Flower Minimalist Style: Leave the flowers off entirely for a clean, unisex look that pairs perfectly with little boy outfits.
  • Striped Soles: Use Seamless Crochet Color Changes to make striped soles for a fun, beachy vibe.
  • Gladiator Style: Extend the back strap chain to wrap around the baby's ankle for a trendy gladiator look, similar to the style of the Crocodile Stitch Gladiator Sandals.
  • Yarn Substitutions: While cotton is highly recommended for summer wear, any soft acrylic worsted weight yarn will work beautifully for these sandals.
  • Colour ideas: Try classic navy and white for a sailor theme, or soft pastel pinks and mint greens for a sweet spring look.

Common Troubleshooting & Fixes

  • Problem: The soles are curling up like little bowls.
Fix: Your slip stitch border is too tight. Redo the border using a larger hook or consciously loosen your tension.
  • Problem: The straps are too loose and slip off the baby's heel.
Fix: Go down a hook size for the straps, or reduce the number of chains in the back strap by 1 or 2 stitches.
  • Problem: The textured bumps are showing up on the wrong side of the strap.
Fix: Push the triple crochet stitches forward with your fingers or hook as you work to force them onto the right side.
  • Problem: The two soles don't match in size even though I followed the same pattern.
Fix: Your tension likely changed between making them. Try crocheting both left and right soles in tandem, step-by-step, to keep your tension consistent.

Care Instructions

Hand wash these little sandals in cool water with a mild baby-safe detergent. Shape them with your fingers while damp and lay them flat to dry in the shade. Avoid machine washing or tumble drying, as this can cause the cotton to shrink or lose its shape.

Final Thoughts

There is nothing more rewarding than seeing a little one kick their feet in a pair of shoes you made yourself. These tiny flip flops are a quick, satisfying project that will bring smiles to everyone who sees them. Grab your hook, pick your favorite summer colors, and let's get stitching!
