Toddler Strider Slippers
Keep tiny toes warm and cozy with these thick, cushioned crochet slippers featuring a secure double-button strap.
There is nothing quite like watching a toddler explore the world on chubby, unsteady little feet.
But keeping those active feet warm on cold hardwood floors can be a real challenge. Store-bought socks slip off in seconds, and bulky shoes are too stiff for indoor play.
That is where these handmade slippers come to the rescue.
They hug little feet snugly, stay put during wild play sessions, and offer a cloud-like cushion with every step.
I designed this pattern to be incredibly sturdy by holding two strands of yarn together. It works up so fast you can easily finish a pair in a single evening.
If you have ever struggled with tiny footwear, don't worry. I have gathered my best Baby Bootie Crochet Tips to guide you through the trickier parts of shaping and sizing. Let's grab our hooks and make something beautiful!
Why You'll Love This Pattern
- Double-strand thickness: Provides extra warmth and a durable sole that won't wear out quickly.
- Secure double-button strap: Keeps the slippers firmly on active toddlers who love to pull their footwear off.
- Quick project: Using thick yarn or double strands means you get instant gratification.
Materials You'll Need
- Yarn: Worsted weight yarn (Category 4), such as Vanna's Choice. You will need two skeins because we work with two strands held together throughout the sole and body.
- Hook: Size H/8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook, or whichever size you need to match the gauge.
- Notions: Four wooden buttons (7/8-inch size), yarn needle, scissors, and contrasting yarn scraps to use as stitch markers.
- Yardage: Approximately 150 to 200 yards of worsted weight yarn.
Gauge & Sizing
- Gauge: 12 hdc x 8 rows = 4 inches using an H hook and two strands of yarn held together. (Pro tip: Use the finished sole measurements to check your gauge!)

Step-by-Step Instructions
Soles for Sizes 5 and 6
Round 1: Holding two strands of yarn together, make 12 (13) chains. Work 1 sc in the second chain from your hook (the skipped chain acts as your first stitch). Work 1 sc in every chain until you reach the final chain. Work 3 sc into that last chain. Now, rotate your work to crochet along the opposite side of your starting chain. Work 1 sc into each of the remaining loops across. Slip stitch to the first chain-1 to join. [24 (26) stitches]
Round 2: Chain 1 (this counts as a stitch). Work 2 sc in the following stitch. Work 1 sc in each of the next 9 (10) stitches. Work 2 sc in each of the next 3 stitches. Work 1 sc in each of the next 9 (10) stitches. Work 2 sc in the next stitch, then work 1 sc into the very first stitch where you started your chain-1. Join with a slip stitch to the starting chain-1. [30 (32) stitches]
Round 3: Chain 1 (counts as a stitch). Work 2 sc in the next stitch. Work 1 sc in each of the next 6 (7) stitches, then work 1 hdc in each of the next 5 stitches. Keep your yarn attached. [39 (41) stitches]
Round 4: Chain 1 (this counts as your first slip stitch). Flip your work so the wrong side of the sole faces upward. Work 1 loose slip stitch into every stitch around. Join with a slip stitch to the starting chain-1. Keep these slip stitches quite loose, as you will need to crochet into them during the next round. [39 (41) slip stitches]
Round 5: Chain 1 (does not count as a stitch). Work 1 sc in the same stitch as your chain-1. Work 1 sc into the next slip stitch, and continue working 1 sc into every slip stitch around. Join with a slip stitch to your first single crochet. Do not turn your work. [39 (41) stitches]
Soles for Sizes 7 and 8
Round 1: Using two strands of yarn held together, chain 12 (14). Work 1 sc in the second chain from your hook (the skipped chain counts as a stitch). Work 1 sc in each chain across to the final chain. Work 3 sc in that last chain. Rotate your work to crochet along the opposite side of the foundation chain. Work 1 sc into each free loop across. Join with a slip stitch to the first chain-1. [24 (28) stitches]
Round 2: Chain 1 (counts as a stitch). Work 2 sc in the next stitch. Work 1 sc in each of the next 5 (6) stitches, then work 1 hdc in each of the next 4 (5) stitches. Work 2 dc in each of the next 6 stitches. Work 1 dc, then 1 hdc in each of the next 4 stitches. Work 1 sc in each of the next 5 (7) stitches, 2 sc in the next stitch, and 1 sc in the same stitch as your starting chain-1. Join with a slip stitch to the first chain-1. Do not break your yarn. [39 (43) stitches]

Round 5: Chain 1 (does not count as a stitch). Work 1 sc in the same stitch as your chain-1. Work 1 sc into the next slip stitch, then work 1 sc into every slip stitch around. Join with a slip stitch to the first single crochet. Do not turn. [39 (43) stitches]
Slipper Body for Sizes 5 and 6
Preparation: We need to mark 22 stitches symmetrically across the toe area. Fold the sole flat lengthwise along the center line. Count back 11 stitches from the center on both sides and place your stitch markers. When you unfold the sole, you will have 22 marked stitches.
Round 6: Chain 1 (does not count as a stitch). Work 1 sc in the next stitch, and continue with 1 sc in each stitch until you are 4 stitches away from your first marker. Work a sc2tog, then work 1 sc in each of the next 2 stitches. Work 1 hdc in the marked stitch, and move your marker up to this new stitch. Work 1 hdc in each of the next 5 stitches. Repeat the sequence of (1 hdc, hdc2tog) a total of 3 times. Work 1 hdc in each of the next 7 stitches, ending in the second marked stitch. Move this marker up. Work 1 sc in each of the next 2 stitches, work a sc2tog, then work 1 sc in each stitch around. Work 1 sc in the same stitch as your starting chain-1, then join with a slip stitch to the first single crochet. [34 (36) stitches. You will now have 19 marked stitches on the toe side.]
Round 7: Chain 1 (does not count as a stitch). Work 1 sc in the next stitch, and work 1 sc in each stitch until you reach the first marker. From this marked stitch to the second marked stitch, you will work only in the back loops (BLO) to create a neat ridge on the front of the shoe. (Tip: To avoid leaving gaps, insert your hook vertically through the back loop and catch the hidden loop directly behind it). Work 1 sc in the marked stitch and move the marker up. Work a hdc2tog, then repeat the sequence of (1 hdc, hdc2tog) 5 times. Work 1 sc in the second marked stitch and move the marker up. Now, resume working through both loops. Work 1 sc in each stitch across, work 1 sc in the same stitch as your starting chain-1, and join with a slip stitch to the first single crochet. [28 (30) stitches. You will have 13 marked stitches remaining on the toe side.]
Round 8: Chain 1 (does not count as a stitch). Work 1 sc in the next stitch, and work 1 sc in each stitch up to the first marker. Work 1 hdc in the marked stitch and move the marker up. Work 1 hdc in the next stitch. Repeat the sequence of (skip the next stitch, work 1 hdc) 5 times. Work 1 hdc in the second marked stitch and move the marker up. Work 1 sc in each stitch across, work 1 sc in the same stitch as your starting chain-1, and join with a slip stitch to the first single crochet. [23 (25) stitches. Your 8 marked toe stitches may look slightly asymmetrical now, but they will still serve as a perfect guide.]
Round 9: Slip stitch loosely in each stitch until you reach the first marker. Slip stitch into the marked stitch. Work one sc2tog, followed by two hdc2tog decreases. Chain 1. Work a sc2tog decrease across the second marked stitch and the stitch immediately following it. Slip stitch loosely in each remaining stitch to the end of the round. Join with a slip stitch to the very first slip stitch of this round (it will feel a bit tight to insert your hook here, which is how you know you've found the right spot). Fasten off and weave in your ends.

Work a sc2tog, then work 1 sc in each of the next 2 stitches. Work 1 hdc in the marked stitch, and move your marker up. [34 (38) stitches. You will now have 19 marked stitches on the toe side.]

(Tip: To avoid leaving gaps, insert your hook vertically through the back loop and catch the hidden loop directly behind it). Work 1 hdc in the marked stitch and move the marker up. Repeat the sequence of (hdc2tog, 1 hdc) 2 times. Work a dc2tog decrease, then work 1 dc in the next stitch, followed by another dc2tog decrease. Repeat the sequence of (1 hdc, hdc2tog) 2 times. Work 1 hdc in the second marked stitch and move the marker up. Now, resume working through both loops. Work 1 sc in each stitch across, work 1 sc in the same stitch as your starting chain-1, and join with a slip stitch to the first single crochet. [28 (32) stitches. Work 1 sc in the second marked stitch and move the marker up. Work 1 sc in each of the next 5 (6) stitches, then work 1 dc in each of the next 4 (5) stitches. Work 1 dc in the same stitch as your starting chain-2, and join with a slip stitch to the first double crochet. [24 (28) stitches. You will have 9 marked stitches remaining on the toe side.]
Round 9: Slip stitch loosely in each stitch until you reach the first marker. Slip stitch into the marked stitch. Work one sc2tog, followed by two hdc2tog decreases. Chain 1. Work a sc2tog decrease across the next stitch and the second marked stitch. Slip stitch loosely in each remaining stitch to the end of the round. Join with a slip stitch to the very first slip stitch of this round (it will feel a bit tight to insert your hook here, which is how you know you've found the right spot). Fasten off and weave in your ends.
Crafting the Straps
Sizes 5 and 6 (Round 1): Using a single strand of yarn, chain 12. Work 1 hdc in the 4th chain from your hook (two of the skipped chains will naturally form your first buttonhole). Work 1 hdc in the next chain, then slip stitch in each of the next 5 chains. Work 1 hdc in the next chain. In the very last chain, work (1 hdc, chain 2, 1 hdc) to create your second buttonhole. Now, rotate your work to crochet along the opposite side of the foundation chain. Work 1 hdc in the next chain loop, slip stitch in each of the next 5 loops, work 1 hdc in the next loop, and 1 hdc in the final loop. Slip stitch to the next chain to join. [23 stitches around, counting the 2 chains for the buttonholes as stitches.]
Sizes 5 and 6 (Round 2): Chain 1. Work 4 hdc into the chain-2 space of the buttonhole. Work 2 hdc in the next stitch, then 1 sc in the next stitch. Slip stitch only through the back loops (BLO) of the next 5 stitches. Work 1 sc in the next stitch, then 2 hdc in the next stitch. Work 4 hdc into the next chain-2 buttonhole space. Work 2 hdc in the next stitch, then 1 sc in the next stitch. Slip stitch through the back loops (BLO) of the next 5 stitches. Work 1 sc in the next stitch, 2 hdc in the next stitch, and join with a slip stitch to the first half double crochet. Fasten off.
Sizes 7 and 8 (Round 1): Using a single strand of yarn, chain 13. Work 1 hdc in the 4th chain from your hook (the skipped chains form your first buttonhole). Work 1 hdc in the next chain, then slip stitch in each of the next 6 chains. Work 1 hdc in the next chain. In the final chain, work (1 hdc, chain 2, 1 hdc) to create your second buttonhole. Rotate your work to crochet along the opposite side of the foundation chain. Work 1 hdc in the next chain loop, slip stitch in each of the next 6 loops, work 1 hdc in the next loop, and 1 hdc in the final loop. Slip stitch to the next chain to join. [25 stitches around, counting the buttonhole chains as stitches.]
Sizes 7 and 8 (Round 2): Chain 1. Work 4 hdc into the chain-2 buttonhole space. Work 2 hdc in the next stitch, then 1 sc in the next stitch. Slip stitch only through the back loops (BLO) of the next 6 stitches. Work 1 sc in the next stitch, then 2 hdc in the next stitch. Work 4 hdc into the next chain-2 buttonhole space. Work 2 hdc in the next stitch, then 1 sc in the next stitch. Slip stitch through the back loops (BLO) of the next 6 stitches. Work 1 sc in the next stitch, 2 hdc in the next stitch, and join with a slip stitch to the first half double crochet. Fasten off.
Finishing Touches
Repeat the entire process to make a second slipper. Once both slippers are complete, weave in all remaining yarn tails securely. Position the straps across the instep of the slippers and sew the wooden buttons onto the slipper body, aligning them perfectly with the buttonholes on your straps.
Easy Variations & Custom Ideas
- Furry Trim: Add a cozy faux-fur collar around the ankle opening. You can use the techniques from our Toddler Furry Boots Pattern to give these slippers a winter-ready look.
- Matching Family Sets: Make a matching pair for yourself! Use our Adult Crochet Slipper Pattern, Talia Slippers to create a cute "mommy and me" set.
- Non-Slip Soles: To keep active toddlers safe on slick floors, apply dots or squiggles of puffy paint or Plasti Dip spray to the bottoms of the soles. Alternatively, sew on small patches of Jiffy Grip fabric or shelf liner.
- Playful Color Blocking: Use two different colors of yarn held together to create a beautiful marled effect, or work the sole in a dark color and the body in a bright pastel.
- Adjusting Strap Length: If your toddler has high arches or chubby feet, simply add 1 or 2 extra chains to your starting strap chain to make it longer. If you want a wider strap, switch to a slightly larger hook size.
- Yarn Substitutions: Any sturdy worsted weight acrylic or wool blend yarn will work beautifully. Lion Brand Vanna's Choice, Red Heart Super Saver, or Paintbox Yarns Simply Aran are excellent choices.
Common Troubleshooting & Fixes
- Problem: The soles are curling up too much.
Fix: This usually happens if your tension is too tight. Try switching to a larger hook size, or make sure you are pulling up your slip stitches loosely in Round 4. - Problem: The slipper looks lopsided or the toe shaping is off-center.
Fix: Double-check your stitch markers! Symmetrical placement is key. Fold the sole perfectly in half and count back exactly 11 stitches on each side to place your markers. - Problem: There are large, unsightly holes in the toe area where I worked the decreases.
Fix: When working in the back loops (BLO) during Round 7, make sure to insert your hook vertically to catch both the back loop and the hidden loop directly behind it. This adds stability and closes up any gaps. - Problem: The strap is too short to reach across the foot.
Fix: Toddler feet vary wildly in chubbiness! Simply add a couple of chains to your starting chain for the strap, or use a larger hook to crochet the strap.
Care Instructions
To keep these handmade slippers looking their best, I highly recommend hand washing them in cool water with a mild detergent. Gently squeeze out the excess water (never wring them!) and lay them flat on a clean towel to air dry. If you used 100% acrylic yarn, you can machine wash them on a delicate cycle inside a mesh lingerie bag, but air drying is still the best way to preserve their shape and keep the wooden buttons looking beautiful.
Final Thoughts
There is nothing quite as satisfying as seeing a little one run around in something you made with your own two hands. These slippers are not only incredibly practical, but they also make the absolute best gifts for baby showers, birthdays, or holidays. Don't be afraid to play with colors and make them unique. Happy crocheting, my friends!
