Step 1: Crafting the Ribbed Band

Start by crocheting a long, narrow strip of single crochet in the back loops only to create a stretchy, knit-look ribbing. Once the band reaches the desired length for your size, join the short ends with slip stitches to form a circle.

Step 2: Working the Hat Body

Turn your work sideways and crochet evenly around the edge of the ribbed band. Work in joined rounds, using half double crochet or double crochet stitches to build up the height of the hat.

Step 3: Option A - Finishing the Messy Bun Beanie

For the messy bun version, begin decreasing your stitches gradually as you near the top. Stop crocheting when you have a comfortable opening left (usually about 2 to 3 inches in diameter) to allow your ponytail to pass through easily. Fasten off and weave in your ends.
