Today, we are diving into the Winter Blossom Slouch. It is a project that looks wonderfully complex but is actually a breeze to work up once you get into the rhythm.

For my samples, I reached for Lion Brand Wool-Ease because the wool blend gives it a lovely bounce, but you can easily substitute other worsted weight favorites.

Abbreviations & Stitch Instructions

• ch: Chain - Yarn over, pull loop through.
• sl st: Slip stitch - Insert hook, yarn over, pull through stitch and loop on hook.
• sc: Single crochet - Insert hook, yarn over, pull up loop, yarn over, pull through both loops.
• hdc: Half double crochet - Yarn over, insert hook, yarn over, pull up loop, yarn over, pull through all three loops.
• yo: Yarn over.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Crafting the Ribbed Band

Using your smaller 5.5 mm hook, chain 8 (or your preferred width for the brim). Work in back loops only single crochet (sc BLO) rows until your band reaches the required length for your chosen size when slightly stretched. Join the short ends with slip stitches to form a circle.

Step 2: Setting Up the Hat Body

Switch to your larger 6.0 mm hook. Join your yarn to the edge of the ribbed band. Work a round of single crochet evenly around the edge of the band, ensuring your stitch count is a multiple of the pattern repeat. Join with a slip stitch to the first single crochet.

Step 3: Working the Blossom Puff Rounds

Round 1: Chain 2 (does not count as a stitch). Work a puff stitch in the first stitch, chain 1, skip next stitch. *Work a puff stitch in the next stitch, chain 1, skip next stitch; repeat from * around. Join with a slip stitch to the top of the first puff stitch.

Round 2: Slip stitch into the first chain-1 space. Chain 2. Work a puff stitch in the same space, chain 1. *Work a puff stitch in the next chain-1 space, chain 1; repeat from * around. Join with a slip stitch to the first puff.

Repeat Round 2 until your hat reaches the desired height (fewer rounds for a beanie, more rounds for a slouchy style).

Step 4: Shaping the Crown

To decrease, work your puff stitches together or transition to half double crochet decreases. For a simple finish, work a round of half double crochet, decreasing in every third stitch, followed by a round of single crochet decreases. Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread the tail through the remaining stitches, pull tight to close the top of the hat, and secure.

  Fix: Your tension might be too tight. Try switching to a larger hook or consciously pulling your puff stitch loops up higher.
• Problem: The brim is too loose and slips down.
  Fix: Go down a hook size for the ribbing, or work fewer rows of ribbing before joining.
• Problem: The top of the hat has a bulky, messy gather.
  Fix: Make sure to work a few decrease rounds before pulling the top closed, rather than gathering the full width of the hat.
• Problem: My puff stitches look uneven.
  Fix: Focus on pulling each of the three loops up to the exact same height before pulling your yarn through.

Care Instructions

Hand wash your finished hat in cool water with a mild wool wash. Lay it flat on a clean towel to dry, shaping it gently while damp. Avoid wringing or hanging it to dry, as this can stretch out the beautiful puff stitches.
