Gauge Swatch Pattern

Using J (6mm) hook, loosely ch 26.

Row 1: 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across, turn. (25 sc)

Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), *skip next 2 sts, 2 puff sts in next st; repeat from * until 3 sts remain, skip 2 sts, 1 dc in last st, turn. (7 pairs of puff sts)

Row 3: Ch 3, 2 puff sts in the space between the next 2 puff sts; repeat across, 1 dc on top of turning ch-3, turn. (7 pairs of puff sts)

Rows 4-5: Repeat Row 3.

Main Hat Body (All Sizes)

Sizes are written as: 0-3 m (3-6 m, 6-12 m, Toddler, Child, Preteen/Small Adult, Large Adult).

Round 1 (Option 1 - with FSC): With J (6mm) hook, work 33 (39, 45, 48, 51, 54, 57) fsc. Join with a sl st to the first fsc, being careful not to twist. (Note: Use your starting tail to sew the small gap at the bottom closed later).

Round 1 (Option 2 - without FSC): Loosely ch 34 (40, 46, 49, 52, 55, 58). Sl st to first ch to form a ring. Ch 1, 1 sc in the back bump of the next ch and each ch across, 1 sc in the same ch as the beginning ch-1, sl st to first sc. [33 (39, 45, 48, 51, 54, 57) sc]

0-3 Months & 3-6 Months Crown

Note: For the next two rounds, do not work a ch-1 to close your 3-wrap puff stitches. This gathers the crown tightly. Stitch counts for 3-6 months are in brackets.

Decrease Round 1: Sl st to the gap between the puff sts, pull up a tall loop, 2 puff sts in the same gap. *1 puff st in the next gap, 2 puff sts in the following gap; repeat from * to end, sl st to top of first puff st. [6 (7) pairs of puff sts alternating with 5 (6) single puff sts]

Round 3 to End (0-3 Months only): Working in a continuous spiral, ch 1, work 1 sc in each st around until the opening is the size of a finger. Sl st to next st, fasten off leaving a long tail. Sew the remaining hole shut.

Round 3 to End (3-6 Months only): Working in a continuous spiral, ch 1, work sc2tog across the remaining stitches until the opening is finger-sized. Sl st to next st, fasten off with a long tail and sew shut.

6-12 Months Crown

Decrease Round 2: Sl st to the gap, pull up a tall loop, 1 puff st in the same gap. *1 puff st on top of the next puff st, 1 puff st in the gap between the next pair; repeat from * to end, sl st to top of first puff st. [16 (17, 18, 19) puff sts]

Note: For the next two rounds, do not work a ch-1 to close your puff stitches.

Round 3 (All Sizes): Work 1 hdc in the third loop of the marked stitch, move the marker up, and work 1 hdc in the third loop of each stitch around until you reach the stitch before the marker. Do not join, do not turn. (Note for Child Sizes and Up: Repeat Round 3 once more to make the band wider.)

Round 4 (All Sizes): Work 1 sc in the third loop of the marked stitch, move the marker up, and work 1 sc in the third loop of each stitch around. Sl st to the third loop of the marked stitch, sl st to the next sc, and fasten off.

Finishing

Weave in any remaining tails. Sew your faux fur pom-pom securely to the top of the crown, and sew the optional 1-inch metal button to the side of the band for a lovely decorative touch.

  Fix: Double-check that you are omitting the "chain 1" close on the specified decrease rounds. This omission is designed to pull the stitches together smoothly without adding extra bulk.
