Step-by-Step Instructions

Crocheting the Blue Shell (Top Body)

Using the blue yarn (Seafoam Sparkle):

Rnd 1: Work 8 sc into a magic ring. (8 sc)

Rnd 2: Work 2 sc in each stitch around, placing a stitch marker in the very first stitch to keep track of your rounds. (16 sc)

Rnd 3: *Work 2 sc in the next stitch, then 1 sc in the following stitch; repeat from * around. (24 sc)

Rnd 4: *Work 2 sc in the next stitch, then 1 sc in each of the next 2 stitches; repeat from * around. (32 sc)

Rnd 5: *Work 2 sc in the next stitch, then 1 sc in each of the next 3 stitches; repeat from * around. (40 sc)

Rnd 6: *Work 2 sc in the next stitch, then 1 sc in each of the next 4 stitches; repeat from * around. (48 sc)

Rnd 7: Work 1 sc in each stitch around. Fasten off using an invisible join. (48 sc)

Crocheting the Lime Green Belly (Bottom Body)

Using the green yarn (Lemon Lime):

Rnds 1-6: Follow the exact same instructions as Rounds 1 through 6 of the Blue Shell. Finish with an invisible join. (48 sc)

Crafting the Flippers (Make 4)

Start with the blue yarn:

Rnd 1: Work 8 sc into a magic ring, then slip stitch to the first stitch to join. (8 sc)

Rnd 2: Pull the green yarn through the blue loop on your hook. Tug the blue yarn tail to make the loop disappear, cut the blue yarn, and tie a secure knot on the inside. Continuing with green yarn, work 2 sc in the same stitch as your slip stitch (mark the first stitch), work 1 sc in the next stitch, *work 2 sc in the next stitch, then 1 sc in the next stitch; repeat from * to the last stitch, then work 2 sc in the final stitch. (14 sc)

Rnd 3: Work 1 sc in each stitch around. (14 sc)

Turn the flipper inside out. Trim your yarn tails (except the working yarn) and tuck them inside.

Rnd 4: *Work 1 sc in the next stitch, then decrease across the next 2 stitches; repeat from * to the last 2 stitches, then work 1 sc in each of the last 2 stitches. (10 sc)

Begin stuffing the flipper lightly. Leave the very end unstuffed so it lies flat for joining.

Rnd 5: Work 1 sc in each stitch around. (10 sc)

Rnd 6: *Work 1 sc in each of the next 2 stitches, then decrease across the next 2 stitches; repeat from * around. Finish with an invisible join. (8 sc)

Knot the yarn tail on the inside, trim, and tuck it away.

Joining the Body and Attaching the Flippers

All placement markers will be positioned on the Blue Shell.

Find the invisible join on the shell and place a marker here for the head.

Mark the 5th stitch on both the left and right sides of this head marker to mark the front flippers.

Fold the shell in half to find the opposite side, and place a marker for the tail.

Mark the 4th stitch on both the left and right sides of this tail marker for the back flippers.

To begin joining, slip stitch into the stitch immediately following the tail marker.

Hold the green belly piece directly underneath the blue shell.

Work a single crochet through both layers in the same stitch and the next stitch.

Position a flipper at the marker. Work 4 slip stitches going through the top shell, both layers of the flipper, and the bottom belly piece.

Once the flipper is secure, slip stitch in the next stitch through both body layers.

Single crochet both layers together until you are 4 stitches away from the next marker.

Attach the first front flipper using 4 slip stitches through all layers.

Slip stitch in the next stitch through both body layers, then single crochet both layers together past the head marker until you reach the second front flipper marker.

Attach the second front flipper with 4 slip stitches.

Slip stitch in the next stitch through both layers.

Begin stuffing the body firmly with fiberfill.

Single crochet both layers together until 4 stitches remain before the final marker.

Attach the second back flipper with 4 slip stitches.

Single crochet through both layers until you reach the tail marker stitch.

To make the tail: Chain 3, work 1 sc in the second chain from your hook, work 1 sc in the next chain, then work 1 sc in the marked stitch. Slip stitch to the first single crochet of the round to join.

Fasten off, pull the tail yarn under the turtle, weave it in, and hide the end inside the stuffing.

Crocheting the Head

Using the green yarn:

Rnd 1: Work 8 sc into a magic ring. (8 sc)

Rnd 2: Work 2 sc in each stitch around, marking the first stitch. (16 sc)

Rnd 3: *Work 2 sc in the next stitch, then 1 sc in the following stitch; repeat from * around. (24 sc)

Rnd 4: Work 1 sc in each stitch around. (24 sc)

Position the safety eyes between Rounds 4 and 5, keeping them 10 stitches apart. Insert the eye screws, place a small piece of cross-stitch fabric over the back of the screw inside the head, and then snap the safety backing in place. (This fabric layer prevents the eyes from slipping through the chunky stitches). If making this for a baby, embroider the eyes with black yarn instead.

Begin stuffing the head firmly.

Rnd 5: *Work 1 sc in the next stitch, then decrease across the next 2 stitches; repeat from * around. (16 sc)

Rnd 6: *Work 1 sc in the next stitch, then decrease across the next 2 stitches; repeat from * around. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. (11 sc)

Thread your yarn needle, whip stitch through the front loops of all 11 stitches, add any final stuffing, and pull tight to close. Knot and hide the yarn tail.

Attaching the Head

Place the head at the designated head marker.

Using green yarn, sew the head securely to the green belly half of the body.

To prevent the head from drooping, make a few small, hidden stitches through the edge of the blue shell into the back of the head.

Knot securely and hide all yarn tails inside the body stuffing.

  Fix: Your tension might be too loose. Try dropping down a hook size or holding your yarn tighter to close up the gaps.
• Problem: The head of my turtle is floppy and hangs down.
  Fix: Make sure to sew the head not just to the green belly, but also secure the upper back of the head to the edge of the blue shell with a few hidden stitches.
• Problem: The safety eyes feel loose or look like they might pull through the stitches.
  Fix: Always use a small piece of fabric or felt on the inside of the head before snapping the washer in place to block the safety eye from slipping through the chunky yarn.
• Problem: My stitch counts are off at the end of the round.
  Fix: Chunky chenille yarn can make it hard to see stitches. Always use a stitch marker in the first stitch of every round and count your stitches diligently.

Care Instructions
