Step-by-Step Instructions

Crocheting the Bag Body

Using your K (6.5mm) hook, chain 95. If you want to adjust the size, you can use any odd number of chains.

Row 1: Insert hook into the back bump of the second chain from your hook and work 1 sc. Work 1 sc into the back bump of every chain across to the end. Turn your work. (94 stitches)

Row 2: Chain 1 (this does not count as a stitch). Work 1 sl st in the BLO of the very first stitch. Work 1 hdc in the BLO of the next stitch. *Repeat this sequence (1 sl st in BLO, 1 hdc in BLO) across until you reach the final stitch. Work 1 hdc through both loops of the last stitch. Turn. (94 stitches)

Row 3: Chain 1 (does not count as a stitch). Work 1 hdc in the BLO of the first hdc. Work 1 sl st in the BLO of the next sl st. *Repeat this sequence (1 hdc in BLO, 1 sl st in BLO) across to the end of the row. Turn. (94 stitches)

Row 4 and beyond: Keep repeating Row 2 and Row 3 alternately.

Continue working these two repeating rows until your piece measures 9.5 inches wide when measured near the outer edges. Fasten off, leaving a tail. Note: The middle of your rectangle might stretch and look slightly narrower, so always measure near the shorter ends for accuracy.

Folding and Seaming

Lay your finished rectangle completely flat. Position it so your ending yarn tail is at the bottom right corner.

Fold the bottom left corner diagonally upward.

Fold the top right corner diagonally downward.

Take the bottom corner of the right-side triangle (along with the layer underneath it) and fold it over so its bottom edge aligns perfectly with the right edge of the left triangle.

Join your yarn and work a slip stitch seam through the BLO of both the front and back layers along the designated seam lines. This joins the sides and instantly creates your classic hobo bag shape.

Adding the Handle

Option A: Leather Strap. If you prefer a modern, store-bought look, sew your 23.6-inch leather handle to the top corners of the bag using sturdy wax thread.

Using your smaller I (5.5mm) hook, chain 78.

Row 1: Work 1 sc in the second chain from your hook and in each chain across to the end. Turn. (77 stitches)

Row 2-4: Chain 1, work 1 sc in each stitch across to the end. Turn. Fasten off after completing Row 4, leaving a very long tail.

Assembly: Count in 8 stitches from the edge. Start slip stitching the two long edges together to form a tube. Stop slip stitching when you have 8 stitches remaining on the opposite end. Fasten off.

Attachment: Insert the flat un-seamed ends and a tiny bit of the tubed section into the bag corners, then sew them down securely.

Finishing Touches

Sew your leather snap closure to the inside top edges of the bag opening.
