Loopy Crochet Caterpillar

Meet Loopy, a squishy and adorable chunky caterpillar crochet project that is worked in continuous segments with almost zero sewing required.

There is something purely magical about watching a toy come to life under your own fingers.

But let's be completely honest for a moment.

Most amigurumi patterns require a mountain of sewing. You end up with dozens of tiny limbs, ears, and body parts scattered across your lap, waiting to be stitched together. It is tedious, and if you are anything like me, getting those pieces aligned perfectly can feel like a test of patience.

That is exactly why I designed this sweet little caterpillar to be a low-sew project.

By crocheting the legs directly into the body segments as you go, you completely bypass the headache of sewing twelve tiny feet. The body flows continuously from one colorful segment to the next. You only need to sew the head and the antennae at the very end.

• Yardage: Approximately 80 yards of each main color (Coral Blossom and Sunshine Sparkle) and about 8 yards of White.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Segment 1 - Coral

Round 1: Start with Coral yarn. Work 8 sc into a magic ring. (8 sc)

Round 2: Work 2 sc in each stitch around. Place a marker in the very first stitch to track your rounds. (16 sc)

Round 3: *Work 2 sc in the next stitch, then 1 sc in the following stitch. Repeat from * around. (24 sc)

Round 4: Work 1 sc in each stitch around. (24 sc)

Round 5 (Adding Legs): Work 1 sc in the marked stitch, then 1 sc in the next 4 stitches. *Place a marker in the BLO of the next stitch. In the FLO of this same stitch, work 1 sc, ch 4, sc in the 2nd ch from hook, sc in the next 2 chs, then sc2tog across the FLO of this same stitch and the next stitch.* (First leg completed). Segment 2 - Yellow

Round 1: Pull the Yellow yarn through the remaining Coral loop on your hook. Pull the Coral tail tight to make it disappear. Ch 1 with Yellow. Work 2 sc in the same stitch as the slip stitch. Place a marker in the first sc. Work 2 sc in each of the next 7 stitches. Cut the Coral yarn and tuck the tail inside the body. (16 sc)

Round 2: Work a firm sc in the marked stitch and move your marker up. Work 1 more sc in this same stitch. Work 1 sc in the next stitch. *Work 2 sc in the next stitch, then 1 sc in the next stitch. Repeat from * around. (24 sc)

Firmly stuff the first segment to your liking before continuing.

Round 3: Work 1 sc in each stitch around. (24 sc)

Round 4 (Adding Legs): Work 1 sc in the marked stitch, then 1 sc in the next 7 stitches. *Place a marker in the BLO of the next stitch. In the FLO of this same stitch, work 1 sc, ch 4, sc in the 2nd ch from hook, sc in the next 2 chs, then sc2tog across the FLO of this same stitch and the next stitch.* (First leg completed). Stuff this final segment completely. Thread your yarn tail onto a tapestry needle, whip stitch through the front loops of the remaining 8 stitches, pull tightly to close, knot securely, and hide the tail inside the body.

The Head

Round 1: Using White yarn, work 8 sc into a magic ring. (8 sc)

Round 2: Work 2 sc in the next stitch, place a marker in the first sc to indicate the start of the round, then work 2 sc in each of the remaining 7 stitches. Sl st to the marked stitch. Cut the yarn and pull the tail through. (16 sc)

Round 3: Join the Yellow yarn with a single crochet join a couple of stitches before the fasten-off point. Place a marker in this join stitch. Work another sc in the same stitch. Work 1 sc in the next stitch. *Work 2 sc in the next stitch, then 1 sc in the next stitch. Repeat from * around. Sl st to the marked stitch. (24 sc)

Round 4: Ch 1, work 1 sc in the same stitch and place a marker. Work 1 sc in each of the next 22 stitches. Work a sc2tog across the last stitch and the slip stitch from the previous round. Sl st to the marked stitch. (24 sc)

Adding the Eyes: Insert the 16mm safety eyes into the center of the white circles. For extra security, place a small rectangular piece of cross-stitch fabric (about 2 inches by 1.25 inches) over the back of the post inside the head before pushing the plastic washer on. If making this toy for a baby or toddler, embroider the eyes with black yarn instead to prevent choking hazards.

Round 5: Ch 1, work a sc2tog across the same stitch and the next stitch. Place a marker in this decrease. Work 1 sc in the next stitch. *Work sc2tog across the next 2 stitches, then 1 sc in the next stitch. Repeat from * 5 times. Work a sc2tog across the next 2 stitches, then work a sc2tog across the last stitch and the slip stitch of the previous round. Sl st to the marked stitch. (16 sc)

Round 6: Ch 1, work a sc2tog across the same stitch and the next stitch. Place a marker in this decrease. *Work sc2tog across the next 2 stitches. Repeat from * 6 times. Work 1 sc in the slip stitch of the previous round. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for closing. (9 sc)

Fill the head firmly with fiberfill. Whip stitch through the front loops of the remaining stitches, pull tight to close, knot, and hide the tail inside.

The Antennae (Make 2)

Row 1: Leave a long tail for sewing. Using Coral yarn, ch 5. Sl st in the second chain from your hook, then work 1 sc in each of the next 3 chains. Turn.

Row 2: Ch 1, work 1 sc in each of the first 3 stitches, then sl st in the last stitch. Fasten off, leaving a long tail.

Assembly: Fold the antenna piece in half lengthwise with the smooth side facing outward. Use a tapestry needle to whip stitch the long edges together.

Final Assembly

Sew the antennae securely to the top of the head using the yarn tails. Hide any remaining ends inside the head.

Position the head at an angle on the first body segment (the first Coral segment) and sew it firmly in place. Weave in and hide all remaining yarn tails inside the toy.

Easy Variations & Custom Ideas

• Rainbow Caterpillar: Instead of alternating two colors, use a different bright shade for each of the five segments to create a vibrant rainbow toy. Learn more about clean transitions in my guide on Seamless Crochet Color Changes.
• Miniature Version: Swap the super bulky chenille yarn for a worsted weight acrylic yarn and a 4.0 mm hook to make a tiny, pocket-sized caterpillar.
• Extra Long Caterpillar: Add two or three more segments to the body to make a long, bendy draft-stopper style toy.
• Embroidered Details: Add sweet rosy cheeks using a bit of pink yarn, or embroider a tiny happy smile just below the eyes.
• Squeaker or Rattle Toy: Insert a small plastic rattle disc or squeaker inside the middle segment while stuffing to turn this into an interactive baby toy.
• Colour ideas: Pastel mint and lavender for a modern nursery, or classic red and green for a festive holiday caterpillar.
• Yarn substitutions: Any super bulky weight chenille yarn (such as Premier Yarns Parfait Chunky) will work beautifully as a substitute.

Common Troubleshooting & Fixes

• Problem: The stuffing is peeking through my stitches.
  Fix: Chenille yarn can be slippery. If your stitches are too loose, try dropping down a hook size or consciously tightening your tension.
• Problem: My legs are pointing in different directions or look crooked.
  Fix: Make sure you are placing your stitch markers exactly in the back loops as instructed. This keeps the legs aligned on the underside of the body.
• Problem: The color changes look messy and jagged.
  Fix: When changing colors between segments, always pull the new color through the very last loop of the previous segment to create a clean, seamless transition.
• Problem: The safety eyes feel loose or wobble.
  Fix: Always use the cross-stitch fabric trick on the inside of the fabric before securing the backing. This gives the safety eye post a solid foundation to grip onto.

Care Instructions

To keep Loopy looking fresh and clean, I highly recommend spot cleaning with a damp cloth and mild soap. If you must machine wash this toy, place it inside a pillowcase or lingerie bag, use a delicate cold cycle, and let it air dry completely. Do not put chenille toys in the dryer, as high heat can melt or ruin the soft fibers.
