Little Dapper Dude Sweater
Dress your little guy in style with this classic shawl-collar crochet baby jumper featuring a rich, textured stitch and a cozy, modern fit.
There is nothing quite like dressing a baby boy in a tiny, sophisticated sweater that makes him look like a miniature professor.
But let's be honest. Finding crochet patterns for boys that aren't overly plain or incredibly stiff can feel like a real chore. Many garments end up boxy, scratchy, or simply lack that special design spark.
That is why I designed this textured pullover. It features a gorgeous, classic shawl collar that frames a baby's face beautifully while keeping their neck warm.
This design uses a simple combination of basic stitches to create a dense, modern texture that looks far more complicated than it actually is.
If you can make a chain and work basic double crochets, you can absolutely tackle this project. I will guide you through every single step, from the bottom hem to that dapper collar.

Why You'll Love This Pattern
- Classic Style: The elegant shawl collar design adds instant, timeless charm to any outfit.
- Rich Texture: A beautiful, modern stitch pattern that provides excellent warmth without being overly bulky.
- Simple Construction: Worked in straightforward flat panels with minimal shaping, making it highly beginner-friendly.
Materials You'll Need
- Yarn: Worsted weight (Size 4) yarn. I used Lion Brand Wool-Ease in Wheat and Denim for my samples (197 yards per skein).
- Hook: Size H (5 mm) for the main body panels, and Size G (4.5 mm) for the ribbed collar and bottom hem.
- Notions: One 3/4-inch wooden button, a tapestry needle for weaving in ends, and stitch markers (safety pins or paper clips work great too!).
- Yardage: Approximately 200 to 500 yards depending on the size you choose to make.
Gauge & Sizing
- Gauge: 4 pattern repeats and 8 rows = 4" square (using the larger 5 mm hook). To test this, chain 26 and work Rows 1 to 5 of the Back Panel pattern. Your first row will have 25 stitches, and the following rows will have 7 pattern repeats.
- Sizes included: 0-3 months, 3 months, 6 months, 12 to 24 months, 2T, and 3/4T.
- Finished measurements:
- 0-3 months: 18" chest, 10.5" length
- 3 months: 20" chest, 11" length
- 6 months: 20" chest, 12" length
- 12-24 months: 22" chest, 13" length
- 2T: 24" chest, 14" length
- 3/4T: 26" chest, 15" length

- fphdc & bphdc: Front Post and Back Post half double crochet. Worked around the post of the stitch from the previous row instead of the top loops. Check out our Crochet Post Stitch Guide for a detailed photo tutorial on post stitches.

Pattern Notes
- Skill Level: Easy / Advanced Beginner.
- This pattern is written in US crochet terms.
- The item is worked flat in panels (front and back) and joined at the shoulders, with sleeves and collar added directly to the assembled piece before seaming the sides.
- Tension Tip: Keep your leveling rows snug! If your leveling rows are too loose, your neckline and shoulder seams might stretch out. You can use the smaller hook for these rows if needed.
- Customization Tip: You can easily adjust the length of the body or sleeves by adding or subtracting pattern rows before starting the shaping or cuffs.

Seaming the Shoulders (All Sizes)
Place the front and back panels together with their Right Sides (RS) facing each other. Align the 12 (12, 12, 14, 14, 16) stitches of the shoulders with the corresponding stitches on the back panel. Using your tapestry needle and the long yarn tails, sew them together using a whip stitch. Do not seam the sides yet; we will work the collar first.
Shawl Collar (Sizes 0-3, 3, 6 Months)
The collar is worked on the Right Side (RS) of the sweater, going back and forth along the front opening and the back neck. To avoid leaving holes, insert your hook into the actual body of the chains or stitches rather than the spaces.
Row 1 (Size 0-3 Months only): Using the smaller 4.5 mm (G) hook, slip stitch to the bottom left corner of the front rectangular opening. Work 1 sc in the same spot. Distribute 10 sc evenly along the side until you are about 1-1/4 inches from the shoulder seam. Work 2 sc in the next point, 1 sc in the next point, 2 sc in the next point, 1 sc in the next point, and 2 sc in the next point to reach the shoulder seam. Work 1 sc in the shoulder seam. Work 2 sc in each stitch across the back panel (these will be quite crowded). Work 1 sc in the next shoulder seam. Work 2 sc in the next point, 1 sc in the next point, 2 sc in the next point, 1 sc in the next point, and 2 sc in the next point. Distribute 11 sc evenly down the right side to the base of the opening. Turn. [64 sc]
Row 1 (Sizes 3 & 6 Months only): Using the smaller 4.5 mm (G) hook, slip stitch to the bottom left corner of the front rectangular opening. Work 1 sc in the same spot. Distribute 10 sc evenly along the side until you are about 1-3/4 inches from the shoulder seam. Work 2 sc in the next point, *(1 sc in the next point, 2 sc in the next point) and repeat from * 2 more times to reach the shoulder seam. Work 1 sc in the shoulder seam. *(Work 2 sc in each of the next 3 stitches, then 1 sc in the next stitch) and repeat from * 3 more times to reach the next shoulder seam. Work 1 sc in the shoulder seam. *(Work 2 sc in the next point, then 1 sc in the next point) and repeat from * 2 more times. Work 2 sc in the next point, then distribute 11 sc evenly down the right side to the base of the opening. Turn. [74 sc]
Marking the Collar: Place a stitch marker in the 6 (7, 8)th stitch from the shoulder seam on both sides of the collar. You will work half double crochets between these markers in the upcoming rows to make the collar wider at the back of the neck. Move the markers up as you work.
Note: All remaining collar rows are worked in the Back Loops Only (BLO).
Row 2: Chain 1. Work 1 sc in the back loop of the very first stitch and in each stitch across to the end. Turn. [64 (74, 74) stitches]

Work 1 hdc in the back loop of each stitch until you reach the marked stitch on the other side. Work 1 hdc in that marked stitch (move marker up). Work 1 sc in the back loop of each remaining stitch to the end. Turn. [64 (74, 74) stitches]
Remaining Rows: Repeat Row 3 five more times for all three sizes, then fasten off. (You can add more repeats of this row if you prefer an even wider collar).

Seaming the Sides (All Sizes)
Fold the sweater along the shoulder seams with the Right Side (RS) facing inward. Using your tapestry needle and a whip stitch, sew from the sleeve cuff all the way down to the bottom hem on both sides. Turn the sweater right side out. If you need help securing your yarn tails, check out our guide on Weaving Crochet Tails.
Bottom Ribbed Hem (All Sizes)

Work 1 hdc directly in the side seam, then continue the alternating fpdc and bpdc sequence back to the beginning. Slip stitch to the top of the beginning chain-2. Do not turn.
Row 2: Chain 2. Work 1 fpdc in each fpdc and 1 bpdc in each bpdc across to the end. Slip stitch to the top of the beginning chain-2. Fasten off.
Button & Loop Attachment (All Sizes)
Sew your 3/4-inch wooden button onto the right side of the shawl collar.
Button Loop: Using the smaller 4.5 mm (G) hook, chain 17 (17, 18). Fasten off. Loop this chain over your button to test the fit and placement on the left side of the collar. Keeping the bumpy side of the chain facing upward, pull both yarn tails through the same point on the left side of the collar. Knot each tail securely a few times on the inside of the collar, then weave in the remaining tails to secure.
Easy Variations & Custom Ideas
- Contrast Ribbing: Work the collar, cuffs, and bottom hem in a contrasting color (like Denim) while keeping the body neutral (like Wheat) for a sporty, varsity-jacket look. Learn how to transition colors cleanly with our guide on Seamless Crochet Color Changes.
- Striped Body: Add stripes to the main front and back panels by swapping colors every 4 rows.
- Alternative Buttons: Swap the rustic wooden button for a shiny toggle button, a vintage brass button, or even a cute animal-shaped button to match a nursery theme.
- Lightweight Cotton Version: Substitute the wool-blend yarn with a soft worsted-weight cotton yarn to make a breathable spring or autumn pullover.
- Color Ideas: Try classic combinations like forest green and cream, mustard yellow and charcoal grey, or navy blue and heather grey.
- Yarn Substitutions: Any standard worsted weight (Size 4) yarn will work beautifully. Excellent alternatives include Red Heart Soft, Caron Simply Soft, or Paintbox Yarns Simply Aran.
Common Troubleshooting & Fixes
- Problem: The shawl collar is gaping or feels too loose around the neck.
Fix: Your Row 1 single crochets might be too loose. Redo Row 1, making sure to work your stitches tightly, or drop down to a 4.0 mm hook for the collar. - Problem: The leveling rows are wavy or flaring out.
Fix: Leveling rows must be worked very tightly to pull the textured stitches into a straight line. If they are flaring, undo the row and work it with a tighter tension or a smaller hook. - Problem: The sleeves are too long or too short.
Fix: You can easily adjust the sleeve length by adding or subtracting repeats of Row 6 before starting the cuff pattern. - Problem: The textured stitch pattern looks uneven or messy.
Fix: Double-check that you are skipping exactly 3 stitches between your (2 dc, ch 2, sc) clusters. Missing a skipped stitch will throw off the alignment of the entire row.
Care Instructions
To keep this handmade sweater looking its best, hand wash it in cool water with a mild baby-safe detergent. Gently squeeze out excess water by rolling it in a clean towel—never wring or twist crochet garments. Lay the sweater flat to dry on a flat surface to prevent the stitches from stretching out of shape.
Final Thoughts
There is nothing quite like the pride of seeing a little one run around in a cozy sweater you made with your own two hands. This pullover is a wonderful, timeless project that makes for an incredible baby shower gift or a treasured family heirloom. Take your time with the post stitches, keep your leveling rows snug, and most importantly, enjoy the process. Happy crocheting, my friends!
