Origami Crochet Slippers
Learn how to craft cozy, custom-fit footwear with this simple flat-worked pattern featuring a unique folded square toe.
There is nothing quite like sliding your feet into a warm, handmade pair of slippers at the end of a long day.
Many slipper patterns require working in the round, which can be incredibly frustrating if you struggle with shaping or keeping track of your stitch counts. It is easy to lose your place, resulting in one slipper that fits perfectly and another that is far too large.
This clever design solves that problem completely by working the entire piece flat before folding it into shape.
We will use basic stitches to create a simple rectangular sole that transitions into a comfortable upper. The stretchy ribbed texture of the single crochet rows ensures a snug, forgiving fit that molds to your foot.
Trust me, if you can make a simple dishcloth, you can easily finish these cozy house shoes.
The magic happens at the very end when we fold the toe into thirds, creating a modern, stylish square-toe look. Grab your hook, find a cozy spot, and let's make some slippers together!

Assembly and Seaming (All Sizes)
Step 1: Seam the toe on the wrong side (the side without the stitch marker).
Step 2: Fold the toe end into three equal sections. Whipstitch through all three layers to secure them, making sure to catch the very edge of the inner middle layer.
Step 3: For the second slipper, repeat the process but fold the toe in the opposite direction before seaming to create a mirrored left and right pair.
Step 4: Weave in all remaining yarn tails securely. Turn the toe inside out by pushing your thumbs into the corners.
Making and Inserting the Ties (All Sizes)
Tie Pattern (Make 2): Chain 54, fasten off, and trim the yarn tails to 1/2 inch.
Insertion: Measure approximately 4-1/2 inches (or 4-3/4 inches for sizes 9–12) down from the toe. On the top layer, thread the tie from the inside to the outside, about 1/4 inch (1 sc row) below the edge. On the bottom layer, insert the tie downward about 1/2 inch (2 sc rows) below the edge, ensuring this point is 1/2 to 3/4 inch lower than the top insertion point, then bring it back out after 2 stitches. Pull the tie ends to equal lengths and tie a neat bow.

Common Troubleshooting & Fixes
- Problem: The slipper sole is curling up significantly as I work.
Fix: This is completely normal for single crochet rows. It will flatten out once you add the upper and block or wear the slippers. - Problem: My slipper feels too loose around the heel.
Fix: You can weave a thin strand of elastic thread through the final edging row, or pull your tie slightly tighter to secure the fit. - Problem: I am getting large, unsightly holes along the sides of the sole when starting the upper.
Fix: Avoid inserting your hook into the large spaces between rows. Instead, insert your hook directly into the dense body of the stitches. - Problem: The two slippers look identical rather than like a left and right foot.
Fix: Make sure you fold the toe section in opposite directions when seaming the second slipper.
Care Instructions
To keep your slippers looking fresh and cozy, I highly recommend hand washing them in cool water with a mild wool wash. Gently squeeze out the excess water without wringing, reshape them by hand, and lay them flat on a dry towel to air dry. If you need help hiding those pesky yarn ends before washing, take a look at our guide on Weaving Crochet Tails.
